Poll Post for the week starting Monday, Nov 21

Time to get this week’s Poll Post underway for our 3 weekly polls. We’ll start off talking about the Stones poll (as usual), where we enter week 1,216 of voting, and week 107 of rating all of the band’s songs. Here's this week’s rating question: Rate the Stones song “Always Suffering” , from zero (lowest) to 10 (highest).

“Always Suffering” from Bridges To Babylon, Record 2, Side C, of the Vinyl Album

"Always Suffering” was recorded between March and July of 1997 and then released just 2 months later on the album Bridges To Babylon, on September 29,1997. There's little more to say about this one since the Stones noted really nothing about the tune, other than to state that Charlie Watts, who never in his life sang on any of the Stone’s songs, had it noted on the album’s sleeve - as a joke, to credit him for singing the background vocals. The Stones would do things like that from time to time – remember when they credited Bill Wyman for “bass and dancing” on Love You Live? Yet with that noted, today the fools who control the Stones info at Wiki, took that joke as a true fact and lists Charlie as singing on the song to this day!

Here is the correct lineup for this one: Lead Vocal and Electric Guitar: Mick Jagger; Electric Guitar: Keith Richards; Pedal Steel Guitar: Ron Wood; Acoustic Guitar: Waddy Wachtel; Drums: Charlie Watts; Bass Guitar: Darryl Jones; Organ & Piano: Benmont Tench; Tambourine: Blondie Chaplin; Percussion: Jim Keltner; Backing Vocals: Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Waddy Wachtel, Bernard Fowler, Doug Wimbish and Blondie Chaplin... To rate this week’s song, just click on the following link: Stones Weekly Poll.

Last week at the Stones weekly poll, we asked this: Rate the Stones song “Winning Ugly” , from zero (lowest) to 10 (highest).

“Winning Ugly” from 1986’s Dirty WorkLP

Well last week at this poll, we returned to the Ron Wood years and saw what we always see whenever we first return to that era of the Stones, and that is, seeing a major drop off in voter turnout (in fact, for last week, it was the lowest vote total seen in more than 20 straight weeks for any weekly poll at this domain, as the poll didn't even break the 2,300 marker) along with the usual low rating given to the song being looked at, with the tune last week being "Winning Ugly", from the Dirty Work album. I guess for a song from that LP, it really didn’t do that bad, seeing the strongest 5 rating ever recorded going by voting percentage. But a 5 is still just a 5. To see and check out the final results from last week’s poll, just click on here: Stones Weekly Poll - week 1,215. After that, you can also check out the Stones song's rating standings and see just how low in those standings, compared to the other songs already voted on, it placed, by clicking on this link: Stones Song Ratings & Standings - List Page 5

Now let’s move on over to this week’s Classic Rock Poll, where we enter week 855 of polling and while I had an interesting multi week poll ready to be launched with this week's poll, I decided not to go that route with it – being that one of the biggest holiday weeks of the year here in the U.S. is happening, and I never like to start up such a poll question in such a week. So, for this week - we still get a great question to vote on, but one with only 13 choices, so it should be easy and fast for you to make a pick out of the few choices you have. So, just what's the question this week?.... Well, here it is: What is the best rock song which has lyrics in it that repeats over and over again, either “nah nah nah...” or “no no no...”.

Rock song with lyrics that repeat either “nah nah nah...” or “no no no...”

.

Usually, the intro to the poll questions isn't as long as the poll's description, but this week it is, as there isn't too much left to explain on this one. I will note that 7 of the songs listed have "no no's" in them while the other 6 and have "nah, nah’s". BTW, is it spelled “Na” or “Nah”? While I prefer “Na”, officially it’s spelled “Nah”, so I’ll go with that spelling for the poll.

All of these songs listed in this poll are online at YouTube if you want to hear them before you vote. Anyway, which song will you pick that IYO, has the best nah nah or no, no’s in it? To make your pick, just click on the following link: Classic Rock Poll.

Last week at our Rock poll we asked What is the Best Rock Song about Outlaws or Criminals (Part 3 of 3)?.

Rock Songs about Outlaws or Criminals

Lots of close voting, with the Top 10 for last week containing 14 songs, thanks to a 4-way tie for the final spot. But the top spot song winner came from one of the 2 Stones songs listed. Which one and what 2 songs were they? To find out and see the full, finial results from last week’s poll, just click on the following link: Classic Rock Poll, week 854. As is always the case, we finish up the Poll Post talking about this week’s Beatle Poll, where we enter week 606 of voting along with week 40 of rating the Beatles’ songs. This week we ask: Rate the Beatles song, “Blue Jay Way”, from zero (lowest) to 10 (highest).

“Blue Jay Way” the real street sign for the street that George was renting out a house on in the Hollywood Hills

This week we rate a song written by George Harrison, an eastern sounding song, like several of his later day Beatle tunes, yet for this one, it has no eastern instruments played on it. The organ George played on the ditty made the song sound eastern, as he added in drone like sounds to his organ along with John Lennon then adding in reversed tape sounds to also make it sound this way. There are no guitars played on this number, other than Paul McCartney's Bass guitar, with Cellos being the main string sound that we hear.

This song, which was released in 1967 on the group's Magical Mystery Tour EP (in the UK) and LP (in the U.S., where EPs are almost never released), was written by George one night as he waited up for some friends to show on a very foggy night, at a home he was renting out one summer in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles, on a street named Blue Jay Way. George had just gotten to the house as it was, and was suffering from jet lag, as he had just gotten into town from London. As he waited on his friends to arrive, he wrote the song on the spot and since they were 2 hours late getting there, he had the song finished before they arrived.

The lineup for the Beatles on this song was: George Harrison – Lead and Backing Vocals, Drone-sounding Organ; John Lennon – Backing Vocal, second Organ, reversed Tape sounds; Paul McCartney – Backing Vocal, Bass Guitar; Ringo Starr – Drums, Tambourine; with several unnamed session musicians playing the Cellos.

Last week at the Beatles poll we answered this question: Rate the Beatles song, “Strawberry Fields Forever”, from zero (lowest) to 10 (highest).

“Strawberry Fields Forever” from 1967

Last week at the Beatles poll we not only saw a nice turnout, but just missed seeing our highest rated Beatle song by only 0.1%, as "Strawberry Fields Forever" took in 99.7% of the 10 votes, just missing out with tying what "A Day in the Life" scored with its 10 rating, that being 99.8%. Only 7 who voted in this poll, out of 2,417 who cast a vote, rated the song less than a 10, with 6 of those 7 rating it a 9. So a well-loved song indeed! With that noted, the top 4 rated songs now in the Beatles rating standings were all written by John Lennon (alone), with 6 out of the Top 10 highest ratings also written by John (another one was written by he and Paul together, then one written by Paul alone, one by George alone, along with one cover song to finish out that Top 10).... You can of course check out the Beatles Standings by visiting this page here: The Beatles Song Ratings and Standings page . Or, to take a look at the full and finial poll results from last week’s question, just go there: Beatles Poll, week 605.

So that will do it for another Poll Post. I can’t believe another Thanksgiving will be here in just a few days (or may even be passed by the time you read this). To me, while it’s been my favorite holiday for years now, I’m just not ready for it yet this year. Now yes, I already got the turkey and everything else that I’ll cook, and this year my daughter Jackie will be here on Tuesday morning and will stay the entire week with me to help me prepare for the dinner and help me clean up the house, etc. I’m actually looking more forward to my oldest kid being here for a few days than the holiday itself, as it’s been such a long time since she’s stayed here for several days like this! Yet once the holiday gets here, I’m know I’ll get more into it, since I’ll also see a few more family members and friends who I don’t see anywhere as much as I used to (that’s what happens when your kids grow up and move hours away from you). So yes, deep down I am for sure gonna enjoy this next week and I hope all of you do the same - even if you don’t live in the States and don’t have a holiday to look forward to this week!
