Poll Post - for the week starting Monday, January3

So, the new year is here, 2022, and it has to be better than the last 2 years, right? Well, maybe not, but in the meanwhile, our weekly polls go on and since it’s Sunday nite (even if it doesn’t feel like it’s Sunday nite), it’s Poll Post time, so let’s look at our 4 new polls for this new week.

First up is of course the Stones poll, where we enter week 1,170 of voting and week 61 of rating the Stones songs. This week’s question will ask this: Rate the Stones song “Driving Too Fast”, from zero (lowest) to 10 (highest).

“Driving Too Fast”, from the 2005‘s A Bigger BangLP

This week we’re back to the Ron Wood years… and we’ll look at the song “Driving Too Fast”, recorded in June of 2005 and then released on the album A Bigger Bang on September 5, 2005. I have very little info on this song (and most Stones songs recorded after 2002), and there's also very little written online about this one. But one site claims it was written by MJ, and I already knew that Ron Wood does play on it for sure (Ronnie didn't play on half of the LP). So again, guess the only other thing to note is the lineup for this record, which is: Mick Jagger: Lead Vocals, Guitar, Percussion; Keith Richards & Ronnie Wood: Electric Guitars; Charlie Watts: Drums... with Darryl Jones on Bass and Chuck Leavell on Piano. With little else to say, let’s rate this week’s song now, and to do that and vote, just click on the following link: Stones Weekly Poll.

Plus remember, we aren’t rating the videos for the songs here, only the songs themself. The videos are included at the voting page so you can hear the songs before you vote.

Last week at the Stones poll we voted on this: Rate the Stones song “Casino Boogie”, from zero (lowest) to 10 (highest).

“Casino Boogie”, from the 1972‘s Exile On Main Street double LP

For this one, the battle for its top rating was between a 9 and 7, with a 7 winning out in the end by one single vote, or 25.1% of the vote. To see the full, final results from this poll, just click here: Stones Weekly Poll - week 1,169. Or to see exactly where the song landed in the song rating standings, just click on here: Stones Top Picks - List Page 5.

Okay, let’s now take a look at this week’s Classic Rock Poll, where we enter week 810 of voting, and at this one we always vote in 2 different Rock Polls in the week. For this week’s first, main poll, we will vote on this: What's the best song about having multiple lovers?

This week’s poll covers several different weird love triangles and not just what you see above

At first, I had worded the question where we would only look at polyamory songs instead of songs about "multiple lovers". But there is a difference between the 2 of course, since polyamory means that all 3 (or more) of the lovers know about each other and accept each other in the relationship. But wording it in that matter would limit the song list big time. So, while some of these tunes are polyamory songs about having multiple lovers, not all of them are. I also considered asking about songs just about love affairs. That would have produced a ton of songs, but, while there's also songs listed about affairs in our poll, not all of them are listed, as I didn't finish putting this list together until New Year’s Day as it was, so I didn't have the time to work on a multi week poll, plus there were other songs that I wanted to list that weren’t about affairs at all. What I was really looking for, was to have this poll be about just one person in such a relationship, where he or she is in love with more than one person. So, it could be an affair or a poly relationship, or even a person who was cheating or who just liked to cheat, but who somehow fell in love with both partners. The poll is just not limited to one aspect of such relationships.

I had gotten the idea for this poll question when listening to an old tape from one of my old radio shows from back in the 1980s, when The Monkees "Look Out Here Comes Tomorrow" came on. A great song that I hadn’t heard in ages, and that was what gave me the idea for this week's poll and what I wanted the poll be about - one person who's truly in love with more than one person at a time. That Monkees song also reminded me of my late childhood friend Brian (the dude who made me a Stones fan), who while in college, was telling me how it was such a hassle having 3 different girlfriends at one time, and with trying to keep all 3 from knowing about each other - while he still sometimes would cheat on all of them with other women. My friend was a true player since his early teens, who actually and usually had one main girlfriend on the side while he played around on her. But in this case, he had 3 of them. I recall telling him that he needed to make up his mind and settle for just one. I very much recall the conversation since it was the last time I would ever see him, as I was already living in Colorado and he was going to school in Connecticut, and we both were back visiting our families in NY at the same time.

Anyway, I did change the question a bit to where it's still mainly about one person who has multiple loves, he or she no longer has to be looking for a way out of her or his’ situation. He or she could be trying to do that (like the Monkees song that got me to think up this question in the first place), but not necessarily. But no, it's not just about having a one-night stand, either, with the expectation of one single song that I listed, The Lovin' Spoonful's "Did You Ever Have to Make up Your Mind", where the guy just keeps falling in love with all the girls he dates. Usually, players don’t allow themselves to fall in love with anybody.

There's a total of 34 songs for this poll, well, 34 choices. A couple of the songs were recorded by more than one artist. One such song was the David Crosby written song "Triad", a true story that he first recorded with The Byrds in the mid '60s while still in that band, but band leader Roger McGuinn didn't allow the song to be released at first since what it was about. So the Jefferson Airplane did a cover of it with Grace Slick on lead vocals and released it first, and Crosby started to sing it at solo gigs, then when he joined CSNY, they released a version of the song that was well received. After that, McGuinn saw the light and released the Byrds original version on a Byrds compilation LP in the early 1970s.... BTW, the other song listed twice is the John Philips penned song "Go Where You Wanna Go", which his group The Mamas & the Papas released first. But it went nowhere when released, yet a year later it was a big hit for The 5th Dimension. Today on the radio we only seem to hear The Mamas & the Papas take of it. Another song that I could have listed twice but didn't, was the Johnny Winter number "I'm Yours And I'm Hers", which I only listed Winter's original take of. Most Stones fans know that the band played this song live - once, to open the Hyde Park Memorial Show for Brian Jones in July of ‘69, since it was Brian's favorite song at the time.

Okay, to cast your vote in this first Rock poll and see the interesting list of songs, just click on here: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote in this poll.

Let's now kick off the year 2022 for the Rock Video Poll with a song that will truly rock your socks off, and that means a classic number from Led Zep. Here's this week's question: Rate Led Zeppelin's Official Live 1972 Video for “Immigrant Song” from zero (lowest) to 10 (highest). Click here for the video

Led Zep and a live take of “Immigrant Song”

Led Zep was on fire for this concert, no question about it, and they handled this song live with ease. There's perhaps only one flaw (in IMO, of course) with this live video, and Led Zep wasn't to blame (but then again, they had to approve the video, so perhaps they are?). My problem with this vid is that's the shots shown all move way too fast for my tastes. Of the different views we see of them jamming to this number, early on not one shot lasts for more than 3 seconds on average, some shots for only a second, and again, IMO, that's not enough time to totally absorb what you're looking at. When Jimmy Page is playing that wonderful guitar riff, I want to see more of that in a closeup, not only a second here and there of it. Near the ending of the video, they do start to show a bit more of all this, like perhaps 5 seconds per shot (better), but then the song's performance is over, making me wish I could have seen more of this one!

Now, when we rate any video, do remember, everything connected to the video counts, and if it's live, then the performance counts that much more. IMO, this performance is a pure 10, but the filming isn't. But this is your vote and what I say doesn't really matter, it's totally what you think! I bet some really dig these short shots like what we have here, it's meant to make this fast-paced early metal song seem even faster (perhaps?), and if you really like how this was filmed, well again, it doesn't matter what I think. I was lucky to see Zeppelin live twice, and when I watched them or any other concert for that matter, my eyes aren't constantly moving from one band member to another. Perhaps for those who were/are into taking speed, perhaps such folks might or would love this, but speed was one drug I always avoided. I always hated speed in any shape or form, from drug use wise to non-drug use wise, like driving, or eating, etc.

To watch the video and vote in this Rock Video Poll, just click on this link: Classic Rock Video Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

Last week in the first Rock Poll we voted on this: When listening to songs from your Rock album collection, do you prefer to hear/play studio songs or live songs?

Does this look something like your rock collection?

No question, most rock fans are like myself, we prefer to listen to our studio LPs over the live ones. To see this poll’s full, final results, just click on the following link: Classic Rock Poll, week 809, Poll 1. BTW, we saw something rare with this poll's finial results, that being, that our (this) first Rock Poll, that almost always leads the way in the vote count, last week, came in last in the vote count! Yep, holiday weeks do weird things to our votes, for sure! But overall, we still had decent poll numbers for all of our polls last week anyway, even if no one poll scored over 2,000 votes for it's finial count last week.

In last week’s Rock Video poll, I asked, and we all voted on this: Rate U2's official music video for “New Year's Day” from zero (lowest) to 10 (highest). Click here for the video

U2 and the single European cover for the song “New Year's Day”, which featured Peter Rowen, a boy who became the face of several of U2’s albums and even more single covers in the 1980s

The top rating for this video was a 9, taking in 32.7% of the votes. You can check out the full results from this video poll by clicking on the following link: Classic Rock Video Poll, week 809. Or, to see the results on the Rock Video list page, and where you can check out the video standings, just click on here: Top Ratings for Rock Videos Page, and the standings are right there on the top of the page.

Okay, we close out this Poll Post talking as usual about the weekly Beatles Poll, where we enter week 561 of voting. This week’s question asks this: What was the best cover song ever made of a Beatle song (Part 3 of 5)?

A few of the artists listed in Part 3 of this poll question

For this week’s Fab poll, we return to the multiple week Beatle series we’ve been voting in, after skipping asking during the usually slow Xmas/New Year's week. Part 3 will be run in the same way weeks one and 2 were handled. Just a reminder, we are not limiting this list to just rock artists, like we usually do at our polls, since for this question, it makes sense to include other artists outside of the Rock genre.

For Part 3 we have 33 new covers songs to look at, so let’s vote on this now. To do that, just click on the following link: Beatles Weekly Poll.

Looking back at last week’s Beatles poll, I asked: What was the best solo Xmas or New Year's song by an former Beatle?

Lennon, Harrison, Macca and Star Sleeve covers of a few of this week’s Xmas and New Year’s songs

While there were 6 songs to choose from, just 2 of them got 93.2% of all of the votes. Those 2 songs were “Happy Xmas (War is Over)” by John Lennon & the Plastic Ono Band, and “Ding Dong” by George Harrison. To see which one came in first, just click on here: Beatles Weekly Poll – week 560..

So that will do it for this week’s Poll Post... Getting back to what i started to note at the beginning of this Poll Post, while I’m super glad that 2021 is over with, and I would love to see things in 2022 get better, of course, but well, I’ve been around long enough to know better, and it ain’t likely that will happen until most people start using their brains first, which never seems to happen, year in and year out. But I guess as long as those of us who are on the smart side (and that’s anybody reading this, since our voters are all a cut above average), well, just keep being aware of what’s happening around you, and us voters should all be okay and hopefully better off for all of '22... I hope all of you have a great new week (and year) ahead!
