Poll Post for the week starting Monday, Jan 18

It’s Poll Post time, which means it’s time to look at this week’s new Rock polls that we’ll be voting on for the week of January 18th, starting off talking about the Stones poll, which enters week 1,120, and where we’ve been rating their songs for the last several weeks. For this week we ask: Rate the Rolling Stones release of the song “Luxury”, from 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest).

Front sleeve from the live 1975 boot “Luxury in Toronto”, which featured the song “Luxury” in both its title and package

The reggae favored "Luxury" was recorded in April and May of 1974 and released later on in that same year on the Stones It's Only Rock ‘n Roll LP. There were actually two different versions of "Luxury" released. A shorter version which ran for 4 minutes 30 seconds, was on the early CD version released in 1986, while the 5-minute version was originally released on the UK vinyl, and on the 1994 and 2009 CD remasters. The difference between the 2 is the shorter version starts the song’s fadeout 30 seconds earlier, and is missing the short guitar solo at the end.

As you may have guessed, this one’s music came totally from Keith, while most of the lyrics were written by MJ. The lineup for this song is: Lead Vocal: Mick Jagger, Electric Guitars and Backing Vocals: Keith Richards & Mick Taylor, Bass: Bill Wyman, Drums: Charlie Watts, Piano: Nicky Hopkins, Percussion: Mick Taylor & Ray Cooper.

This song for sure grew on me, as today I would give it the highest rating possible, while that wasn’t the case when it was first release. How about you? Last week at the Stones poll we answered this question: Rate the Rolling Stones release of the song “Brown Sugar”, from 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest).

Single front sleeve for the song “Brown Sugar”

Yep, another top rating of a 10, but did it rate as high a 10 as JJF rated? Well, you can check out the final results from last week’s poll and find out how high a 10 it received, here: Stones Weekly Poll - week 1,119. Or, to see the results to this poll at the Stones newest List Page, you can visit this new page here: Stones Top Picks, List Page 3., list page 5, it includes a song standing rating list where you can check out where all of the songs rated have landed in the standings.

Now let’s look at this week’s Classic Rock Poll, where we enter week 760 of polling, and for this one, as usual, we vote in 2 different Rock Polls each week.

This week’s question asks: Of the hit songs that artists wish they never wrote, which one is the best?

Brass In Pocket. Chrissie: ‘Why did I ever allow the release of this stupid song and why does everybody love it so much?’

This week we look at what I'm calling the unofficial Part 2 of this almost same question from last week, as last week we looked to agree with the artists as to their songs being bad, while this week we will disagree with them and pick the best song out of the same bunch we looked at last week.... In fact, the more you like a song that's listed this week - and the more its artist puts it down, the more you might want to vote for it. So, while you could vote for your favorite tune listed in this poll, you might decide instead to go with another good song because you think the artist for that song is even more wrong in what they are saying, than what is being noted for your favorite listed tune. We will once again have a total of 18 choices to choose from for this poll and whichever song you think was the best of the bunch is what you should choose this week, but like last week, it shouldn’t matter what the artist thinks, as again for this poll we want to know what you think!

To vote in this week’s first Rock Poll question, just click on here: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote in this poll.

For our second Rock Poll of the week, we have the Rock Video poll, and this week’s question will ask: Rate the Electric Light Orchestra's video for “10538 Overture” (Click here for the video)

From 1972’s “10538 Overture” video, ELO w/ Roy Wood on cello and Jeff Lynne on guitar

Rock fans who knew about the Electric Light Orchestra early on, must wonder what ELO would had been like had its cofounder and co-song writer, Roy Wood, stayed in the band after they made their first album (he did play on 2 tracks on the second LP before he split to formed the band Wizzard). Yet the crazy thing is that this 1972 song, "10538 Overture", which was their first single, and was a UK Top 10 hit, was actually written by the band's future sole leader, Jeff Lynne, yet it was Wood, who played 7 different instruments on the song, who really make it a hit. The always freaky looking Wood, on this song played what sounded like heavy metal cellos (the lead instrument on the song), along with his also playing classical guitar and electric lead guitar, oboe, bass, clarinet, and the French horn. The rest of the lineup for this song was Jeff Lynne on the lead vocals and electric guitar, and Bev Bevan on drums and percussion. The rest of ELO wasn’t formed yet when the 3 of them made this first ELO song. This number was left over from Lynne, Wood, and drummer Bevan's old band, The Move, and at first, they were gonna go with re-recording another song made by The Move, that being Wood's song "California Man" (which in a few years’ time would become a major hit for the band Cheap Trick). But "California Man" was released as a single by their old band's record label as The Move's last single when they first started to rework on it as ELO, so instead, they decided on just working on "10538 Overture" instead, a tune about a escaped prisoner who's prison number was "10538", and who was on the run, but ends up dead on the rocks by a bay.

So yes, this song was recorded very early on, before the entire ELO band was even in place. In the official video release for this number, a very young and different looking Jeff Lynne plays guitar and sings the lead, while we actually see Roy Wood playing his heavy cello along with 3 other non-ELO members filling in also on cello, since in the studio Wood played the cello part over and over again - a total of 15 times (he has stated) to get that special sound from the instrument. Interesting that the guy shown with the pig's face playing one of the cellos, still doesn't look as freaky as Wood looks here, even if for Wood, even he doesn't look anywhere as freaky in this video as he would look a year or so later, but here was where he first earned that freak look with his long hair dyed bright white (I assume it was dyed white, since he wore a Beatles haircut with black hair while in the Move), along with a short white beard (his hair today is sometimes white but usually black), but still, he didn't look anyway as freaky in this video as he would look while in his band Wizzard. Others seen in the video are Richard Tandy on bass (no, he doesn't play bass or keyboards on the first ELO album at all, as he joined the band after the first LP was made, just in time to appear in this video), and Bill Hunt, who is shown playing the French horn (and who did play French horn on several of the songs on the first LP, just not on this song's studio take).

One last note when rating this video, try to ignore the stupid "Hirt Raridades" logo that gets somewhat in the way of this overwise cool video, as it has nothing at all to do with ELO, but was placed there by the person who must have one big head and must feel the need to advertise himself while the vid plays, as his crappy logo gets somewhat in the way of the entire video, as it's seen on the upper left top of the picture. I did try to find another, clean shot of this video, but this one is the only one out there with a clear picture on YouTube, showing the original band playing this song, that I could find. There is a second one of this same video - with no stupid logo on it, but the picture on that one is very dark, really too dark, to the point that this vid I decided to go with is better to view - even with that guy's name up on top. To watch and listen to, and then rate this week’s Rock video, just click on this link: Classic Rock Video Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

Last week in the first Rock Poll we asked this question: Of the hit songs that artists wish they never wrote, which one is really the worst?

Oh Hell Jimmy! I hate singing this stupid song!

In the end, only 5 songs got enough votes for me to even consider putting together a Top 10 list for the final results to this poll, and 4 of those 5 songs took in a total of 94% of the votes! So, I guess this one will only list a “Top 5” on the list pages for its results. But these results just go to show how wrong the artists in question were in how they felt about their songs. I mean, us fans know more than they do, right? If we dig something, well, we dig it, damn it! Anyway, the top pick for worst song was: "Bad Boys" by Wham.

You can check out the full, final results by clicking on the following link: Classic Rock Poll, week 759, Poll 1. Or, to see the Top 10 results, err, I mean, Top 5 results from this poll at the list page, just click on here)

Last week at our Rock Video poll, we asked this: : Rate Robert Palmer's video for “Addicted to Love” (Click here for the video)

“Addicted to Love”, from Robert Palmer's video

I was somewhat surprised that the top rating for this one was only a “9”, with 25.3% of the vote. Was thinking it would see a 10 for sure, but this isn’t the first time these results gave me a surprise and I bet it won’t be the last time, either. You can click on the following link to see the final results from this poll: Classic Rock Poll, week 759, Video Poll. Or, to see where in the updated Video standings this one lands, just go here: Rock Video Standings list page. The standings can be found at the very top of the page.

Let’s close out our Poll Post with the Beatles Poll, and this week’s question for poll week 511, will ask this: Rate The Beatles' Video for 'Help!' (Click here for the video)

“Help!”, from TV’s Big Night Out

This was taken from a TV show called "Big Night Out", which aired in 1965 (they were on this show several times in the past, too), and the show was filmed at ABC Theater, in Blackpool, England. The band recorded this while playing and singing live, but as was the case with some TV shows back in the 1960s (well, still is the case to this day), the show's producers went and dubbed in the studio version of the song when the show was shown later on TV. That of course wasn't the Beatles fault, and this performance is still fun to watch.... I picked this song for this week since I would bet that most people in the U.S. can relate to this one today, as most of us can use some Help! At the moment... with all of the BS going on right now with the out-of-control COVID19 still messing with us, along with our insane, unstable president in his final days of fucking with us, as now his lying to us about the vaccine that no, he didn’t have as many of them to give out as his administration claimed they had just a couple of days ago. Of course, the rest of the world is also suffering with the virus too, so I think no matter where you may live on the planet right now, that you too can relate to this song, as everybody can use some Help! right now!

Looking back at last week’s Beatles poll, we voted on this question: Rate The Beatles' Video for “Rain” (Official Video 2) (Click here for the video)

“Rain”, from video 2

While this second version video of “Rain” didn’t do as well as the first one, it still did good enough to see a 10 rating, just nowhere close to the number of the 10 votes the first version of the song/video saw. To view this poll’s full results, just go here: Beatles Weekly Poll – week 509. Or you can look over the Beatles’ Video standings both over at the regular Rock Video page (see the link at the Rock Video poll results above) or at the Beatles own video and movie page, here: Beatles Movie and Video Ratings and Standings list page.

So that’s it for this week’s Poll Post! I hope all of you have a great week ahead!
