Poll Post for the week starting Monday, July 6

This week’s Poll Post starts off in the usual matter with us first looking at the Stones poll, which enters week 1,093. For this week’s poll we ask: Of the 4 mistitled songs released by the Stones, on which one was the mistaken title the worst on?

’Downtown Suzie’, ‘Who's Driving My Plane?’, ‘Paint It, Black’, and ‘Tell Me Baby’

This week's Stones poll pretty much explains itself, as we are looking at the 4 released Stones songs that had their titles down wrong, not because of the Stones themselves, but because of their record labels - for the most part. All 4 of these songs came from the 1960s, when the band didn't have control yet of their releases and why in time the band would start up Rolling Stones Records as the '70s came around, so only they would have control of the songs they recorded in the future. But the songs from before 1971 were still not in their control, and while all 4 of these mistitled songs were again from the ‘60s, 2 of them weren’t released until the mid ‘70s and early ‘80s, since their old stuff was still ripe to be used and reused by those who didn’t give a crap about the band, other than to make money off of them while still controlling their older music. So yes, that was the case with 2 of the 4 songs listed this week.

One of these songs was the Bill Wyman penned ditty "Downtown Suzie", recorded in late 1968 and which was one of the last songs that featured Brian Jones playing guitar on - and even singing background vocals on. Regardless what some of the morainic comments noted at YouTube claim (if you go there to hear the song), all of the original Stones are on this number, including Keith, Mick, and Brian, who some at YouTube claim aren’t playing on the song, and that only Bill and Charlie played on the song. Yeah, sure! Mick sings most of the lead on the song along with a bit sung by Bill, so how can such a claim even be made? Are people deaf, or maybe they aren’t Stones fans and don’t know the sound of MJ’s voice? Plus any Keith fan knows that’s exactly how his acoustic guitar playing sounds, and you can't miss BJ's rambling backing vocals of "humbly, humbly, hubby" (or whatever it is that he's singing there, but that’s BJ’s voice on there for sure).

But what matters on this song, as is the case on all 4 songs, is the wrong title was used - and in the case of "Downtown Suzie", it wasn't so much that the title was written down wrong when the song was published (as was the case with the other 3), but it was changed by Allen Klein when he gained control of the band's catalog, as he alone flat out changed the title of the song to one that made totally no sense at all! There is no “Suzie" noted anywhere in this song, as the song is about a gal named Lucy! Some believe Klein did this to piss off Wyman, since Bill was pushing for a different release of songs at the time for this new LP of unreleased tunes, that he titled "The Black Box”, which us fans can bet would have been better songs to hear if they had been released. But many of the songs Bill picked were covers, and since Klein would make no money releasing such non-Jagger/Richards/Wyman songs, he blocked the release and went with songs of his own choosing, after first promising the band he would go with the list of songs that Wyman had put together - and the band actually wanted release on what became the Metamorphosis album.

For the remaining 3 songs, all of the incorrect titles were mainly honest mistakes, with 2 of them only affecting U.S. releases on the band's U.S. label London Records, which simply got the song title "Who's Driving Your Plane?" wrong and noted it as "Who's Driving My Plane?" Had whoever put this info together for London had just listened to the lyrics on this one, they would had known what the song's correct title was! But no, they clearly didn't! Then the big hit song "Paint It Black" showed up in the U.S. as "Paint It, Black", with a comma added into the title for some stupid reason. To this day I have heard a few reasons why the comma was added in, but none of the stories have been confirmed, and I guess we will never know why it happened. But it wasn’t supposed to ever be there.

The last song released with an incorrect title, took place in 1983, when the unreleased Bill Broonzy 1960s cover song by the band, "Tell Me Baby, How Many Times" was released by mistake in West Germany, when some moron there was told what songs to include on a greatest hits LP being released in that country only, but the fool was supposed to include the early hit song "Tell Me" on the album. Somehow this person got the unreleased Broonzy cover song "Tell Me Baby, How Many Times", mixed-up with the Jagger/Richards original "Tell Me", and included that never meant to be released cover song - on the album as "Tell Me Baby". The thing was, that while Broonzy never released the song under that title, today you will find covers of it titled "Tell Me Baby" recorded by other artists, and more than likely this is because of the mistaken title used in '83, as once the song was out of the can, us fans liked it and played it - using the wrong title. That had to be one of the best mistakes ever made in the Stones history, since us fans got to hear a never release Stones cover song that wasn’t bad at all. More such mistakes should be made today! So I forgive the moron who made the stupid mistake!

But the bottom line for this poll is - that no, we aren't rating the songs listed, nor are we voting for the best song out of the bunch in a VS poll. What we want to know is which mistitle was the biggest mistake made - or if you prefer, which mistitled song was the worst mistake (title wise) of the 4 made. That is all that counts here. So, which one do you think the mistake was worst on? To make your pick, just click on this link: Stones Weekly Poll.

Looking back at the results from our Stones poll last week, we answered this question: So, how is it for you and your life these days? “Time Is On My Side”, or “Time Waits For No One”?

Is time on this guy's side, and will it, or will it not, wait for him, or let him fall? (If you would like to read up about this photo, you can do so here)

I was thinking that with the pandemic keeping so many folks out of work and staying in their homes, that when asking this question today, most would say that time was on their side, since their normal hectic lives were slowing down some. Right? Well I guess not. I now see that perhaps for many, being forced to stay inside makes time feel like it’s slipping away, while time isn’t hanging around and waiting for them to return to their normal lives. That’s what the final vote tells me anyway. To see the results from this poll, just click here: Stones Weekly Poll - week 1,092.

Okay, now let’s head on over to this week’s Classic Rock Poll, where we enter week 733 of polling, and as usual for this one, we’ll be voting in 2 different Rock Polls…. But a twist will happen this week, as while for the second week in a row at this poll, we won't run a video poll question - we also won't vote in a Rock VS poll question, either. For this week, we will take what we call “the main Rock poll” question - and ask two main Rock Poll questions instead of the usual one, in part since the 2 bands we will look at this week were related. Therefore, the first Rock question this week asks this: Who was the most underrated member of the best known lineup of the band, The Guess Who?

The Guess Who

While the second main Rock poll question will ask this: Who was the most underrated member of the best known lineup of the band, Bachman–Turner Overdrive?

Bachman–Turner Overdrive in 1974

Yes, this week we are looking at two different Canadian Rock bands from Winnipeg, Canada, The Guess Who and Bachman–Turner Overdrive (aka BTO), that had very strong ties and connections to each other. The biggest tie to these 2 bands were their co-leader, lead guitarist, and co lead singer, Randy Bachman. So Poll 1 will ask about The Guess Who, and Poll 2 about Bachman–Turner Overdrive.

For Poll 1…. The Guess Who started out way back in 1958 as "The Silvertones", with bassist Jim Kale the only member at the time who would still be in the group when they would become "The Guess Who" in 1965. Their lead singer at the time was their rhythm guitarist, Chad Allan. In '62, the future Guess Who members Randy Bachman (on lead guitar, and at first just a backing vocalist) and drummer Garry Peterson, joined. In 1965 they became The Guess Who with rhythm guitarist Burton Cummings joining the group in '66, at first as a backing vocalist and keyboard player. Shortly after that, in late '66, Allan started to lose his singing voice and had to quit the group for this reason (he did recover his voice and released several solo LPs years later, including one with Bachman). So, after Allan left, Bachman and Cummings took over as the band's 2 co-lead vocalists (with Cummings considered the main lead singer) and song writers. In time this band became the biggest Canadian group ever, and were also as big a hit in the U.S., and then also had some hits in the UK, and in Australia, too. Their American Woman album was their biggest release and produced 4 big hits, those being the LP's title cut, along with "No Time", and "No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature", which was 2 songs in one. Then of course they had other hits on other albums, like the hit "Laughing", and the single "These Eyes", being one of their best-known songs.

For The Guess Who, they were a band where the main members seemed to leave and then return to, over and over again for years and decades on end. Truth was, for a while in the late '70s into the early '90s, they would perform mainly reunions that would last anywhere from just one show, to playing together for a few years at a time, then disbanding again for a while, only to reform a short time again later. The only true original member from '65 still around today is the drummer, Peterson (who for a while was also in BTO). The band first broke up for some time in the early 70s, after Bachman's Mormon religious beliefs got in the way of things with Cummings and his other bandmates, and he was the first to leave in 1970, at that time making a record first with his former bandmate Allan, and in time he formed a new group called Bachman–Turner Overdrive.

Poll 2…. Bachman–Turner Overdrive (aka BTO) came about in 1973 when its founding member Randy Bachman teamed up with bassist/guitarist and co-lead singer C. Fred Turner. Joining them in the new BTO was Bachman's two younger brothers, Robbie Bachman on drums (and some song writing; he wrote one of their biggest hits, "Roll on Down the Highway"), and Tim Bachman playing rhythm guitar - while sharing lead and backing vocals with his older brother and Turner. In a short time, Randy Bachman did what not too many musicians before him or after him have done - formed and played in a second big hit rock group that had several hits just like the first group that he helped get off the ground, had.

Tim Bachman left the band after the second album was made, and guitarist Blair Thornton took his spot in the group in time for their third release. BTO's biggest hit came off of that LP, their best-known album, Not Fragile (a "tongue-in-cheek" title, named at the expense of the Yes LP, Fragile, which Randy Bachman thought was a stupid title for a Rock album). "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet", was that hit single, which went to #1 in the U.S. and Canada (and in a few other counties, too), while reaching #2 in the UK, but it was a Top 10 hit pretty much over the rest of the globe. The song was at first written by Randy Bachman as a joke and throwaway song, written about yet another younger brother of his, Gary, who had a stuttering problem while he talked and that was why there was the stuttering vocals in the song. The band recorded the song as a private family song only and planned to just send it to Gary - with no intentions of ever releasing it. But their record label felt that their Not Fragile LP, before it was released, needed a song that could become hit single, as they felt the LP was lacking such a song and was only filled with deep cuts. So they asked the band to come up with one more song that could be used as a single for the LP, when one of the band members suggested the throwaway "Stuttering Song", as it was called and titled at the time. When their label heard the song, they knew that song would be a hit, but Randy would only release it if he re-recorded the vocals without the stuttering, and then retitled the song. But when he re-sang the vocals, they didn't sound the same without the stuttering, which was what made the song sound so different and gave it its kick, and the record company released the stuttering version instead, and it became BTO’s biggest hit. Not sure how brother Gary felt about that, but it's funny how some things sometimes work out.

So, these 2 bands are what we will vote on this week in two separate polls. For the first Rock poll about The Guess Who, click on here to vote: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this Guess Who question.

For the BTO poll, just click on the same link: Classic Rock Poll, but when you get to this page for this poll, choose “Poll 2” to vote on the BTO question.

Last week in the first Rock Poll we answered this question: Who was the most underrated member of the original recording lineup of the band, Guns 'n Roses?

Guns 'n Roses in 1987

Only 2 of the GNR members were in the running for this one, as it was race between guitarist Izzy Stradlin, and bassist Duff McKagan. Stradlin came out on top. You can click on the following link to see the full results here: Classic Rock Poll, week 732, Poll 1. Or to see the list of the most underrated members of the 41 other bands that we voted on so far, just follow this link: http://www.keno.org/classic_rock/top_ten_lists_16.htm. You will see this list right up on top of the page.

Last week I ran and you voted on a Rock VS Poll question that asked this: “Monterey” by The Animals vs “Little Wing” by Jimi Hendrix. Which song about the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival is better?

Brian Jones and Jimi Hendrix at Monterey. Brian was an MC and the one who introduced Jimi before he took the stage. BJ & Jimi both come up in the Animals song

Close voting in this one, with The Animals song winning out at the close of voting. You can check out the full results from this poll here: Classic Rock Poll, week 732, Poll 2. Or, to see the final results at the VS list page only, please go here: VS Page 3, List Page 15.

We close out the Poll Post in the usual matter, talking ‘bout the Beatles Poll, where this week we enter week 484 of voting and yes, we are still answering questions about how much we like or dislike the Beatles albums covers. This week we ask: Rate the artwork for the front cover of the 3 Beatles compilation albums of Past Masters

Past Masters, Past Masters Volume One, Past Masters Volume Two front covers

Well we are getting closer to finishing up on rating the covers of the Beatles compilation albums, with only a few more left to go, and this week we will combine the next 3 comp LPs into a vote for all 3 at once, since they have pretty much the same covers other than they got some different text, and with 2 of the 3 mainly in black while the other one is mainly in white.

These 3 were all a 1988 release that seemed a waste of time, unless perhaps if you lived in the UK, since the songs on this one were tunes that included every song released commercially by the band that was not available on the Beatles' 12 original UK albums (but most were still available already on other UK comp LPs), and for those in the U.S, songs not released commercially on the U.S. version of the Magical Mystery Tour LP. But that was the only true selling point for these albums - yet of course, they all sold very well anyway and went either Platinum (in the States) or Gold (elsewhere), since, well, this was an official Beatles release and many fans just has to have the LP.

But remember, the album covers are what we are voting on here, and as you can see above, they are nothing too special, indeed, but nothing really bad, either. Considering how wonderful the Beatles studio album covers were, that clearly wasn't the case with most of their compilation albums, mainly since the 4 Fabs had no say in the look, with Lennon long gone as it was with many of these LPs, including these 3.

Let us all know how you feel about these 3 covers by voting in this week's Beatles album poll. You can do that by clicking on this following link: Beatles Weekly Poll.

Last week at the Beatles poll, we voted on and answered this question: Rate the artwork for the front cover of the Beatles compilation album, 20 Greatest Hits

The Beatles 20 Greatest Hits front cover

A “7” was the top choice for this one taking in 35% of the vote. To see this poll’s full results, just go here: Beatles Weekly Poll – week 483. Or to see the album cover rating standings on the Beatles List Page, click on: Favorite Beatles Album Covers List Page. The standings can be found up on the top of the page.

Well, that takes care of the polls for both this and last week. I hope my fellow Americans all had a nice 4th of July on Saturday, but seeing how things are going in the U.S. these days, we seem to be a totally divided nation today, which is so sad indeed, and which I blame totally on the jackass sitting in the White House at the moment. Please get yourself registered to vote for the November elections (if you aren’t already), as we don’t just need to boot Trump’s ass out of office, we need to do so in the biggest landslide defeat ever seen against a sitting U.S. president. Yes, I know Biden is boring and not a great choice, but I didn’t say vote for him, just please vote against Trump, as there will be others from both the right and left, who will also be running, besides Biden.

Okay, so with that plea, I will close out this week’s Poll Post. I hope all of you have a great week ahead!
