Poll Post for the week starting Monday, March 16

Time to talk about our 4 new weekly polls for this week, starting off with the Stones Poll, where we enter week 1,077 of voting. This week we ask: Rate the Stones live performance video for 'Respectable'

Respectable video

This is the first time since week 1035 (just under a year's time) that we are rating a Stones video... This one was yet another good video directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg for the Stones. Not too bad at all, other than one thing that Hogg should have done, that is, get Keith and or Ronnie to at least pretend to be singing the backing vocals to this song. We clearly hear backing vocals here yet it looks totally ridiculous that no one is singing those vocals; whenever I see any band doing that in a video or on TV, I think of how stupid it looks. If there's backing vocals heard in a song that you are pretending to be playing, then somebody in the group should be - pretending to sing those vocals! Period! Plus of course, Charlie once again looks like he rather not be involved in making this (or any) video, and while fans joke all the time about this, it really isn't a joking matter, he sure doesn't look cool acting like he hates his job and would rather be somewhere else (and as much as Charlie loves drumming, it's a known fact that he hates the promo work that comes with it).

In this video the Stones come across more so as being a Punk band, and since Charlie had his skinhead haircut at the time, that gave then a bit of a Punk band look, too. Overall, this is a fun video to watch and the band looks like they are having a good enough time making it (again, other than Sir Charles).

Looking back at the results for our Stones poll last week, the question asked: “Midnight Rambler” live, from 1972 Madison Square Garden, NYC concert vs “Midnight Rambler” live from 2012 Glastonbury Festival. Which live take is better?

First photo from 1972, second one from 2013

I was somewhat surprised that last week's question wasn't a bit closer. But then again, maybe I should have known better, as most Stones fans today love their older work more so than what they put out today. So anyway, the 1969 show won this one by a couple of percentage points.

All right, now let’s talk about this week’s Classic Rock Poll, where we enter week 717 of the poll and as usual we will vote on 2 different Rock Poll questions. The first poll asks this: What is the worst Disco song made by a Classic, non-disco Rock band or Artist? (Part 3 of 3)

Disco does suck!

Okay, so the final round for this question is here, so let's see now just what disco song is the worst of the worst. There will be 15 songs and artists listed for this poll, and where we only had 4 picks from Part 1 make the final cut, last week from Part 2 we had 11 more choices make it to the finale. So let’s now go and pick the worst disco song ever made by a Classic Rock band or artist.

To see all of the songs listed for round 3 of this question, and to cast your vote in this week’s first Rock poll, just click here: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

For our second Rock question of the week, we have the Rock Video Polls, and will ask this: “L.A. Woman” by The Doors. Official Video released in 1985 vs Professional Skateboarders Video vs Fan Made Video. Which video is better?”

Jim Morrison driving his '67 Shelby Mustang from the fan video

First, for this weekly video poll, we will take a break from rating videos this week and instead will run a combo video/VS poll question. I put the 3 main videos made for the Doors song, "L.A. Woman", up against each other to see which one fans like the most.

"L.A. Woman" was released by The Doors and was the title track for their 1971 album L.A. Woman, the last album made with Jim Morrison and recorded just before his death. The song was recorded at "The Doors Workshop" (the name of their studio) in West Hollywood, Los Angeles, between December 1970 and January 1971. Morrison recorded his vocals in the bathroom of the studio because of the room's natural reverb. In the song, Morrison sings the lyrics "Mr. Mojo Risin" several times," which is an anagram of "Jim Morrison".

But being that this was still the early 1970s and most songs didn't have videos made for them yet (the few songs that did have videos made for them were called "promotional films" at the time and not videos), no such film/video was ever made for the Doors most famous song. In 1985, fourteen years after Morrison's death, The Door's keyboardist Ray Manzarek decided it was time that a video be put together for this classic tune, since by '85 Rock videos were now the big thing, in part thanks to MTV which seem to be taking over things in this new field. So at that time, Manzarek directed a music video himself for the song. It was then released and shown often enough on MTV and was also included in the Doors film Dance on Fire. Today it is considered the band's official video for the song.

In 2012, Matt Goodman directed a new video for the ditty and it was released, but for whatever reasons, it was an edited and much shorter version of the song. Why was that done? In it professional skateboarders take in viewers on a skateboarding tour of Los Angeles, yet it seems to have little to do with what the song is about, other than it is set in LA. Some have called this video the second official video of the song, but the Doors had nothing to do with it. It was made more so to promote these skateboarders.

The fan video that came about in 2010, while very good, also doesn’t follow what the song is about too much either, but the Doors are in it and it's loaded with action and was put together nicely using old footage of Jim and the band (on and off stage), and with Jim driving his old 1967 Shelby Mustang (well, it wasn’t that old back then) in the U.S. southwest desert in most of it (this was taken from the 2009 Doors film When You're Strange). There's also a couple of other movie clips mixed in to this vid, too (from movies where hot rods were featured- Bullitt and Vanishing Point)... Now we rarely ever rate fan videos in these video polls, but will on rare occasions, and if we do end up rating this one, it will be because of what you fans tell me this week with your vote. Whichever of these 3 video comes up on top this week - will be rated in 2 weeks. To view and rate this video, just click here: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

Last week in our first Rock Poll, the question was: What is the worst Disco song made by a Classic, non-disco Rock band or Artist? (Part 2 of 3)

Disco Ball

Here are the 11 songs/artists that made it into Part 3 from last week: Hot Stuff - Rolling Stones (8.9%); Rock The Casbah (12 inch disco version) - Clash (8.8%); Heart of Glass - Blondie (8.8%); I Was Made for Lovin' You' - Kiss (8.8%); Here Comes The Night - Beach Boys (8.7%); Goodnight Tonight - Paul McCartney (8.6%); Alive Again - Chicago (8.5%); Carouselambra - Led Zeppelin (8.5%); You Should Be Dancing - Bee Gees (8.4%); Was Dog a Doughnut - Cat Stevens (8.3%) and What A Fool Believes - Doobie Bros (8.3%).

Last week in the Rock Video Poll we voted on this question: Rate ZZ Top's Official Video for “Legs”

From ZZ Top’s “Legs” video

The ZZ Top video got a 10 rating while bringing in 32.5% of the first place vote. To see the full, final results from this poll, just go here: Classic Rock Poll, week 716, Poll 2. To view the final results on the new Top 10 list page, just click here: Top Video Ratings and Standings Page.

We finish up the Poll Post as usual talking about the Beatles Poll. This week we enter week 468 of polling, and we’ll continue on answering questions about how much we like or dislike the Beatles albums covers. This week’s question is: Rate the artwork for the front cover of the Beatles LP, Yellow Submarine

Yellow Submarine UK front cover w/"NOTHING IS REAL", which the U.S. cover lacked

Yellow Submarine was the tenth album release for the Beatles and the soundtrack to their cartoon movie. It's perhaps their weakest - and no question their least loved album by fans. Many of us hard-nosed Stones fans who are also Beatle fans (that's what, 90% of us?) like to call it the Beatles "Dirty Work" album, although most of us known that deep down, it isn't anywhere that bad, other than maybe side 2, which wasn't the Beatles at all, but the orchestral soundtrack from the film and the reason the album wasn't that much liked by fans. Only six Beatle songs were on this LP - on side one, and two of them weren’t even new songs and had already been released before (including the album's title cut). But what is the only thing that matters with this poll question is none of that - only the album's cover is what counts in this poll as that's the only thing we are voting on here.

The album cover comes from the movie of the same name, showing the Beatles as cartoon characters, and was designed by artist Heinz Edelmann. The same cover was used for the UK and US covers, though the UK jacket contains the words "NOTHING IS REAL" (taken from "Strawberry Fields Forever") just below the album's title, while the US version did not have this.

So how will you rate this album cover? To cast your vote, just click on this following link: Beatles Weekly Poll.

Last week at the Beatles poll we asked: Rate the artwork for the front cover of the Beatles LP, The White Album (aka The Beatles)

The White Album (aka The Beatles)cover

The simple all-white artwork for this LP's cover was well liked when the LP first came out and is still well liked today, as it was voted a 10 (as it should have been, IMO)..

Well, another week and another Poll Post is finished, with only the voting left to happen and then it getting all added up! But what a crazy week here in the U.S. and really all over the world with this coronavirus pandemic! It seems that everything is canceled now or at least put on hold. I and the grandson have tickets to go see the NBA Nuggets on March 27 in Denver, but as you all know, all sporting events - everywhere, are either canceled or put on hold. We only get to visit Denver once a year these days since we moved 4 hours away from that area 18 years ago, and we planned on being there for the entire weekend, but that's not gonna happen anytime soon now. Thing is, trying to get your hotel reservations canceled is almost impossible without waiting on the phone for a couple of hours at least, since everybody who was planning to be anywhere are now not going anymore and that's causing long waits for an operator to answer the phone. I waited on hold one and a half hours earlier today while I was doing other house work and then gave up after I ran out of things to do. Guess I'll try again tomorrow, and then I still have to call about a refund for the tickets, too. But I rather not even go outside right now the way things are getting. People in the next mountain valley over from here have it, that's how close it is to where I live, but Denver has a bunch of people sick with it and being past 65 myself, we are the main folks they are telling to stay indoors and away from others. I almost died from double pneumonia 12 years ago and getting something like this would be the very last way I want to exit this world. There are much easier and less painful ways to cash in your chips than not being able to breath. I never wish to experience something like that ever again!

So everybody please stay as healthy as you can, stay home if you can and become a hermit if you can do that, and sooner or later this pandemic will be over with. As usual, I thank all of you for voting in this week's and last week's polls!
