The thing about 'bad songs' is that they are good enough in some respect so to stand out. Most of us know most of the songs.
But they need to have other qualities. Seriousness. Sincerity. Great effort and emoting helps.
MacArthur Park actually has a beautiful melody. But the lyrics are pretty cringey as we hear of a cake left out in the rain and the storyteller no longer possesses the recipe to bake it again. And all that sweet green icing! Otherwise, its a great song.
Then there's Meat Loaf. Steinman and Meat Loaf are so over the top, so melodramatic. But that's what they do. Nothing is ever understated with Meat Loaf/Steinman. And they've made that work for them.
Now... We Built This City.... that song is just bad. Hardly any redeeming qualities. It is radio friendly to a vulgar degree. Totally fake sounding, overproduced instrumentals, treacly lyrics. Just. Bad. Starship is a hilarious band. They were once great, I guess. I am always reminded of a friend who told me saw them live in the mid 1980s when Grace Slick was touring with them, but was sick for an evening, so the band - with NO ORIGINAL MEMBERS - played with out her!
