Poll Post for the week starting Monday, Nov 18

Let’s get our weekly Poll Post underway for our 4 weekly polls, and as usual we start off talking about the Stones poll, where we enter week 1,060 of the poll, and we’ll ask this question: What was Chuck Leavell's Best Keyboard playing heard on a Stones song?

Chuck Leavell in his younger days w/ his then bandmate, the late Lamar Williams (1973)

The second week at our Stones poll looking at “The Supporting Cast” of the Stones, and this time we look at Chuck’s role in the group.

Chuck started out playing keys for several, mainly minor bands at live dates starting around 1970. While playing with Dr. John in early '72, Gregg Allman caught a show he was playing at and asked him to join him in the studio to play on his first solo LP that he was recording at the time. After that, he would join Gregg's main band, the Allman Brothers Band, in September of '72, and he played a major part on the making of their 1973 album Brothers and Sisters. It was his piano along with Dickey Betts and guest Les Dudek's guitars that made the instrumental song "Jessica", a hit on the LP.

Chuck first played for the Stones on a few dates for the 1981 U.S. tour (along with Ian Stewart) and by the '82 European Tour, he started to play live for them full time and has been a mainstay for the band ever since. In 2006, he served as the "musical director" for the band and devised each night's set-list with Mick Jagger.

I note in the poll choices - where I know for sure that is, if Chuck is playing the piano, organ, or synthesizer, etc., and on the ones I don't know for sure which keys he's playing, I just note it as "keyboards". To vote in this poll, just click here: Stones Weekly Poll.

Looking back at the results for our Stones poll last week, the question was: What was Bobby Keys' Best Saxophone heard on a Stones song?

Bobby Keys

A fun poll last week even if we all knew which song was gonna win in a landslide, that being “Brown Sugar”, taking in 13% of the vote. Although second and third place aren’t as important in these types of polls, still the next 2 choices were predictable too, being “Can't You Hear Me Knocking” and and “Live with Me”.

To see the full final results from this question, just click here: Stones Weekly Poll - week 1,059. You can also see the top pick listed on the Stones Fans’ Top Picks List, Page 2. Just click on “Individual Stones” at the top of the page when you get there and look in that part for Chuck’s name under “The Supporting Cast”.

Okay, let’s move on to this week’s Classic Rock Poll, where we enter week 700 (or 13.4 years), and as usual we will vote in 2 polls in this one week for this poll. The first Rock poll question asks: What is the best rock/pop song that has food in its title (Part 4 of 4)

Ok, so now we get to what I believe is always the favorite week of any multiple week poll question - that being the final week (or part). In this case it's Part 4, and the top songs from Parts 1 thru 3 go up against each other. We will have 22 songs with food in their title to choose from in this final round. Yes, I should had made it work out that this ‘food” question was to run Thanksgiving week, instead of this week, a week early. But oh well!

To cast your vote in this one, just click there: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

This week for the video polls, we will ask this: Rate Bob Welch's live performance video (w/ Christine McVie and Mick Fleetwood) of “Sentimental Lady”

Bob Welch on stage with Christine McVie at the Roxy

This vid is from a live solo gig Bob played at The Roxy Theatre in Hollywood, California, in 1982, along with his former bandmates from Fleetwood Mac, Christine McVie and Mick Fleetwood, who sat in on this song, and who both played on the original - and then on Bob's solo take of this number a few years later.

I always felt real bad for this dude. Welch was of course a member and the leader of Fleetwood Mac from 1971 to 1974, and then after leaving the group because he grew tired of touring, after that, his solo act became big with a few more hit singles being released, including the rerelease of this very song, as it became a hit once again.

The reason I felt bad for Bob Welch, was his being snubbed by The Rock n Roll Hall of Fame when Fleetwood Mac was voted in. It was he who kept the Mac together during the band's middle period, after Peter Green and Jeremy Spencer left and before Lindsey Buckingham joined to replace Welch 4 years later. He was the first American in the band and he took over the leadership of Fleetwood Mac after joining and he saved the band from disbanding. Without him, the Buckingham/Nicks era of the Mac never would have happened. He was the glue that kept the band going and yet the Hall snubbed him and didn’t allow him in with the rest of the band – a band that he saved from folding in the first place! Total bullshit! But the phony Rock Hall is that way and has always been that way, and we all know it! Yet he never seemed to get over being passed up and years later, on June 7, 2012, at aged 66, he committed suicide after undergoing spinal surgery three months earlier that was unsuccessful and left him a invalid.

But let's talk now about happier times for him and talk about this song and video that we are voting on this week. This song was written by Welsh for his first wife and released on the Fleetwood Mac LP Bare Trees, the second album with the group that he played on. Welch sang the lead and as usual played the lead guitar on it (well, “usual” for the band after Danny Kirwan left in ’72), while Christine McVie sang the vocal harmony and played the keys of course, with Mick Fleetwood on drums, along with John McVie on bass and with the soon to be leaving Kirwan also playing guitar. The song was a single and a minor hit and then, became a much bigger hit single when a shorter, second solo version of it was re-recorded after his leaving the Mac. So after leaving the group because he didn’t like living on the road all the time, he made his first solo LP, which was produced by his friend and replacement in Fleetwood Mac, Lindsey Buckingham. This solo version became a Top 5 hit in the U.S. and Canada. But the thing was, this second take of the ditty was really just another Fleetwood Mac redo song, as only his former bandmates of the Mac played with him on this "solo" version, with the backing vocals and keyboards again provided by Christine McVie, along with Mick Fleetwood on the drums once again, while his Mac replacement, Buckingham, plays guitar along with him on the remake. In the video, there are a few others up there on stage with him playing, along with Christie McVie (who doesn't play any keys live here and only sings and plays percussion) and Mick Fleetwood on the drums again - and in a total surprise – we see Mick singing backing vocals too on here! Now that's very rare, indeed!.. Oh, one last thing, this is the shorter solo version of the song they play here and not the Mac take of the song.

As usual, there will be a link at the voting page so you can see this video and performance before you vote. So to do that and vote in this week’s second Rock poll, just click there: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

Now let’s look back at last week’s 2 Rock polls, starting with the first poll question that asked: What is the best rock/pop song that has food in its title (Part 3 of 4)

Another 7 songs made the cut for Part 4 from last week’s voting. They are: Strawberry Fields Forever - The Beatles (12.3%), Breakfast In America – Supertramp (10.4%), Savoy Truffle - The Beatles (7.5%), Coconut - Harry Nilsson (7.1%), Cheeseburger in Paradise - Jimmy Buffett (6.9%), I Heard It Through the Grapevine - Marvin Gaye (6.9%) and Bread and Butter - The Newbeats (at 6.8% of the vote) .

To see the rest of the results from this one, just go here: Classic Rock Poll 1, week 699.

Looking back at last week’s Video Rock poll, the question asked: Rate The Byrds music video of “Mr. Tambourine Man”

The Byrds, surrounded by bird houses

Somewhat close voting in this one with a “9” being the top pick chosen. Wow, where did all of the “10s” go with this poll, as last week’s result makes for 3 weeks in a row of the top score being under a 10 rating. To see the full, final results from this poll, just go here: Classic Rock Poll 1, week 699. Or you can check out exactly where the video ended up in the video poll standings by clicking here: Top Ten Lists, Page, 16, the results will be found up on top of the page, it’s the second list you will see on the page.

Let’s now finish up our Poll Post by looking at the Beatles poll. This week we enter week 451 of voting, and we’ll answer this: Rate the artwork for the front cover of the Beatles LP, A Hard Day's Night(U.S. version)

The U.S. version of the LP (released on Capitol Records) came out 2 weeks before the UK release, so we'll vote on this one first. The 2 different LPs not only had some different music on them – but different album covers, too. Both covers were very cool indeed (in a poll we ran just a few weeks ago, the U.S. cover won out over the UK cover by one single vote!), with the U.S. version showing the 4 Beatles from the top of their noses, on up. Unusual kind of photo and mainly showing off their mop tops.

How will you vote on this one? Just click here to make your pick and rate the LP’s cover: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week’s Beatle poll….the question was: Rate the artwork for the front cover of the Beatles LP, The Beatles' Second Album(U.S.)

This simple cover was well liked anyway, with a “9” being the Top pick with 28% of the vote. To see the full results, just go here: Beatles Weekly Poll – week 450. Or to see the final results on the Beatles List Page, click on: Favorite Beatles Album Covers List Page for the top pick.

Okay, so that finishes up this week’s Poll Post! For me, my favorite time of the year is here, and with a busy week ahead for anybody in the U.S. who hosts a Thanksgiving dinner (that’s always me). Usually you got to buy the main dish (aka, the turkey) a full week before, so the frozen bird totally thaws out first before you cook it. I never know for sure a week beforehand how many will show up here for dinner, but it’s usually a good number of friends to go with my family, so I’ll buy a 16 to 20 pound bird this year, which is the size I seem to buy every year for this feast.

As usual, I thank all of you who take the time to vote each week in our 4 polls! I hope all of you have a great upcoming week!
