Poll Post for the week starting Monday, Aug 19

Tonight we enter week 1,047 of the long running Stones weekly poll, and this week’s question asks: December's Children vs Steel Wheels, which album do you like best?

vs

So 4 match-ups left counting this one for the Stones Album VS poll, and it’s week 297 of these matches. This series is called the “December's Poll (and everybody's)”, and yet it only ever ran in the month of December once in its 16 rounds that have taken place in the past. Now as you have probability guessed, this week is the last matches for these 2 LPs. December's Children is of course the host LP of this series and it sports a record of 9 wins against 13 losses, along with one tie, and sits in 16th place in the standings, and a win this week could push it up one notch in the standings past VL. To win it will have to beat Steel Wheels, which has one of the poorer records of this overall album VS series with just 3 wins, 19 losses and a tie, and regardless of what it does this week, it will stay in and finish up in 21th place, 5 spots from the bottom of the heap.

To see the songs that appear on December's Children, click here: DC, and for the songs on Steel Wheels, just click here: SW. Just remember when looking over the songs, ignore my ratings for the songs that you will see on the linked to pages, as I never wish to influence anybody with what I have down there for each song before anyone votes. You need to decide on your own which LP you feel has the better songs on it.

Looking back at our Stones poll last week, the question was: It's Only Rock 'n Roll vs Aftermath, which album do you like best?

vs or

This one was close from the start, just as I felt it would be, but still, one LP lead for the entire week, and it wasn’t the album that I voted for, either. To see which LP that was, click on: Stones Weekly Poll - week 1,046. Or, you can check out the final results from this match and all of our Stones Album VS Polls, and also view the updated, current album standings at the Stones VS Page 1.

Now let’s look at this week’s Classic Rock Poll, where we enter week 687, and where we run 2 different polls each week! For our first poll, the question will ask this: Rate Janis Joplin's live performance video of “Get it While You Can'”

This live performance video of Janis Joplin singing "Get it While you Can", took place on June 25, 1970, when Joplin was appearing live on the U.S. TV program The Dick Cavett Show. I and every other kid in America back then were at their TV sets on that afternoon and we were all blown away on this day when the show, which aired live each weekday at 4pm eastern time (back in the day when they actually had great live shows on TV) aired. I totally remember this as the show was on the day before school in NY let out for the summer, and yet the next day in school all the kids were talking about it and not the fact that it was the last day of school, which was what most kids would have been talking about normally. Janis just had a way with the teenage Baby Boomers, no question about it. Besides singing this song, the show also featured an interview with Janis that after watching it, most of us fans realized just how human and real this still up and coming superstar was - as she talked about how mistreated she been while in high school in the very conservative Texas oil town of Port Arthur, where this hippie chick just didn't fix in at all with all of the totally straight (and moronic) kids living there. She of course fled to the San Francisco Bay area where she fitted in just fine and where she first made it big. Sadly, Janis would die of a drug overdose only 3 months after this show was made and right as her fame as a solo artist was taking off for the big time.

To vote in this week’s first Rock poll and see this video, just click there: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

For this week’s second Rock poll, the VS poll returns after taking last week off, and it asks: 'The Boy in the Bubble' by Paul Simon vs 'We Didn't Stop the Fire' by Billy Joel. Which song about how crazy everyday life is, is the better one?

vs

"The Boy in the Bubble" by Paul Simon came out in 1986, shortly after the real life boy in the bubble (David Vetter) had died, yet the song isn't really about him and he only comes up once in the song. The song is about the crazy things that go on in life and how we deal with them, or fail to deal with them properly. All the stuff noted in this song are all still the same crazy stuff that we have to deal with today (some things never change), other than the very rare medical condition that the boy in the bubble had, called "Severe Combined Immune Deficiency" is today more treatable, which was what Simon was getting at in the song (“the days of miracle and wonder” and why he titled the song as he did), that we can control some things but still can't control everything in life (so the days of miracle and wonder didn’t always turn out that way after all). So in a way the song was about this kid. But if you weren't around yet or don't recall the story, during this boy's short 12 years of life, most people were amazed how he lived - in a protective giant bubble, living as if he was under house arrest, since he was rarely ever outside, other than to take trips to the hospital in yet a smaller bubble that he had to wear while at the hospital, as he couldn’t go outside, since doing so would kill him. It seemed everybody in the U.S. was interested with this kid's unusual condition, as they watched him grow up in pictures that his mother would reluctantly send out of him in hope that more donations would be send for medical research so that a cure for him could be found. Then when they thought they finally had a for sure cure for him, he underwent a bone marrow transfusion from his sister and was finally let out of the bubble - but then died just a few months later, since it turned out that the transfusion didn't work and was actually what killed him. What a downer story indeed, and what Simon’s song is really about, about all of the downers that happen in life. But David’s story did help in time and lead to research so the few kids around today that get this very rare condition can live longer or even be cured today - and not have to live in a bubble.

“We Didn't Stop the Fire” by Billy Joel, released in 1989, was a big hit and considered a written masterpiece at the time of its release. But unlike Simon’s song, Joel covered big time events that happened, and in doing so he made his song out more so as a history lesson, covering things that happened starting in the year that he was born in (1949) and then moved on up from there, covering events up until 1989 when the song was released. But he still browed from what Simon's song was about, that modern day progress still doesn’t always work... Yet most of us Stones fans flat out could see that he also stole directly from the idea of what the Stones' 1968 song "Sympathy For The Devil" was all about - in how he wrote about bad things happening in the exact same way Mick Jagger had written about them 21 years earlier (other than Jagger started his history lesson thousands of years earlier than Joel). So while Joel's song was a wonderful sounding song, it was very much a twice copied song and written - or borrowed heavily using others' work.

Just a last note as far as the Billy Joel song goes. You could say this is part 2 of a poll we voted in years ago, when I had his song go up against the Stones song noted above. This time we will compare it to the Simon song, which will be a bit different poll than when we compare it to the Stones number, since where they all have connections to each other on what their theme is about, "The Boy in the Bubble" wasn't similar in the same way as "We Didn't Stop the Fire" was to the Stones song - and why Stones fans didn't have any issues with the Simon song, as it covered things totally different than SFTD did, with the one connection being that things overall are still not really getting any better, even in the modern day world.

Also to note, we are not rating videos here, the 2 songs videos are just linked to at the voting page so you can hear the songs before you vote - and nothing more than for that reason. The videos should not influence your vote at all (but in time we will rate them someday, I'm sure). With that noted, I must say, I couldn’t even remember the BJ video at all, and I very much liked it once I saw it (very good), even if I do still feel the song itself borrowed way too much from the Stones SFTD, and even some with the tune it's going up against this week (as again, both songs cover that no, things aren’t really getting any better in modern times). But with that stuff noted by me, don't considerer what my feelings are here as far as the songs go, this vote has nothing to do with what I have to say - but it has 100% to do with how you alone like or dislike the songs, period.

To vote in this week’s second Rock poll, just click there: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

Now let’s look back at last week’s 2 Rock polls, where with both polls we looked at and asked questions about the Woodstock fest that took place 50 years ago last week. So the first question asked this: Rate the Who's Woodstock performance video (Director's cut) of “See Me, Feel Me”

I can just keep repeating myself week in and week out for these rock videos results, with most of them scoring a “10” rating for the top pick, although for this question, we saw the second highest 10 scored rating ever. To see the full, final results from this poll, just click here: Classic Rock Poll 1, week 686. Or to view the results at the list page, you can do that by clicking here: Top Ten Lists, Page, 16, it’s the second list found on the page.

Looking back at last week’s second Woodstock Rock poll, the question asked: Rate Arlo Guthrie's Woodstock's performance video of “Coming into Los Angles”

Yep, this one’s top pick was also a 10, and while not as highly rated as the Who’s number, it still came in with the fifth highest 10 rating ever seen overall for the poll! I got a feeling that we could have rated another 5 or 6 songs from those shows and see all of them do that well, as some of the best ever live performances made took place at that festival. Click on the following link to see the poll’s full results: Classic Rock Poll 2, week 686. Or to see the results on the Rock list page, well just use the link above for the first poll’s results, since the result for this one will be found directly below that other poll’s results.

Okay, so it’s time to end this week’s Poll Post with the Beatles poll, where we enter week 438 of this poll, and the question is: What was the best front cover from the Beatles U.S. LPs that was never used on any UK LPs?

So we will continue for the next 2 weeks asking more questions about the U.S. only album releases. This week we look at 15 of the 19 covers of the U.S. LPs and will find out which one everybody likes the most. There will be links of course leading to each cover photo so you can see each one – but only on the voting results page (here: Beatles Poll Results, by clicking on the LP when you get there…. but not on the voting page itself, as it can’t be programed to link on the voting page if more than 10 choices are listed). Now, besides the U.S. only released LPs that you will see listed for this poll - the list also includes 4 LPs that were also released in the UK but had different front covers on them over there.... Also note that we are going by the time of the album's release here with the question. So for example, the Hey Jude LP and its cover, which was at first a U.S., Canadian and Australian only album, was actually released in the UK more than 10 years after its 1969 US release (the only one of the U.S. Beatle LPs to also be released in the UK, be it was only a limited release in the UK when it did finally get released over there), but it still gets listed for this poll, even if (I believe), it had the same cover found on the U.S. (and Canada and Australian) releases. In part since we didn't vote on it when we voted for the UK album covers.

Now, we will not vote on 4 of the U.S. covers, those 4 being Meet the Beatles!, Rubber_Soul, Revolver, and 1962-67, since they are the same exact covers that were either on their UK counterparts (Rubber_Soul and Revolver), or their covers were used on other UK albums (Meet the Beatles! cover was the same as the cover for the UK's Please Please Me, and 1962-67's cover was the same cover used first for With the Beatles), and we already asked this question about these UK covers a few years back, so no need to include them again. So those U.S. covers will be excluded from the poll. BTW, when we asked for the best cover for the UK LPs, Sgt. Pepper's won, with Abbey Road placing, Rubber Soul came in third and Revolver was in fourth…. One last note, both covers for Yesterday and Today will be listed this week too, and perhaps on that note you can guess what next week's question might be about.

In last week’s Beatle poll….the question asked was: Of the 2 different U.S. debut Beatle LPs, which one is the better of the two?

VS

Meet the Beatles won this one in a close battle. To see the full results, just go here: Beatles Weekly Poll – week 437. Or to see the final results on the Beatles Albums list page, click on : Beatles Albums for the results.

So that takes care of this week’s Poll Post!... Well I had another interesting week last week, one I wished had never happened. But I've written more than once throughout the years here, back then this joint was known as "Gasland" and in NSC posts, about where I live and how we have some interesting things take place here with the wildlife, since there's so many wild animals living around here. Well for me last week, I had my third run in here in 17 years, with a local bear - on Wednesday Night (we got more than a dozen living here this summer, perhaps as many as 18, depending on who does the counting). But while you do have to be alert when outside at night for bears between April and October here, you don't really think about that when inside your home, even if there's several homes broken into each summer by bears. So on Wednesday night at 1:30 in the morning (well really Thursday morning), that's what I experienced, as a bear broke into my home thru my kitchen window!

To say the least, I'm now feeling very uneasy! I mean you got to feel secure in your own home, and I always have... but now I don't. Anyway, according to the local U.S. Forest Service Ranger, it turns out that the break-in at my place was the 20th bear break in to a home here since June in this small community! 20!?... in just 2 plus months? We only got so many homes here as it is, as our population is only around 2,000 people, so maybe there's 600 homes here tops?... Being that I'm well known here in town since I'm the town's weatherman, and my weather site is the #1 website for locals in town as far as visit to it every day goes, I felt my neighbors should know of this latest break in, so I wrote up an article that very morning for all of them to read, which I only linked to at my weather site.... Until now anyway, but if any of you wish to read how this bear got into my home and what I did to stop him as he entered (and some other stuff on past bear encounters), you can do so at this following page: Close Encounters of the Furry Kind, it's about a 5 to 10 minute read.

But I tell ya, I'm really getting sick of this BS! I mean dealing with this outside is one thing - but not inside your home! So after 17 years living here it got me half thinking of moving away. But then again, there are bears all over Colorado, well, other than on the Great Plains part of the state, where I could never live. Even the Colorado Front Range where I used to live and where there are a lot of people, there's still a lot of bears, too. But the bears there are a lot smaller than the ones we have here. We got the biggest ones in the state here, and it was only a bit up the road to the north of here where a guy from our town became the last person in Colorado to kill a grizzly (he killed it in self-defense) - this taking place in the late 1980s - after grizzlies had been declared extinct in the state back in the early ’80s…. But the thing is, if you live anywhere in the Rocky Mountains, the bears are your neighbors, like them or not, and you got to live with them, or move back east (but even back east there's still some bears around, just nowhere as many). I’m never moving back east again anyway, so I guess I'm stuck living with them out here.

So I hope and bet all of you had a much better week than I had last week, but anyway, do try to have an even better week this week! I know I will, as me and my friend Jose will be installing on Tuesday a brand new weather station in my backyard, and as a weather geek, nothing is better than a new weather toy to play with! So yes, there's something good for me to look forward to!

I thank all of you for voting in all of our polls!
