When he was a Beach Boys sideman, Mike Love would refer to him as "Captain Keyboards", and the name stuck. I'm guessing the "Captain" nickname might have been better suited for the duo's brand of mainstream pop than "Dragon", which would seem to have more of hard rock or metal association.
