I play and was pretty decent in my youth when I placed 3rd in the county in high school. Mind you I was 3rd in my grade, so probably something like 15th overall. Plus, the night before I studied a book of openings and used them. Not that that's in anyway cheating, but it might mean that my performance on the day of the tourney was not reflective of my abilities.

I have not played in years. I would urge you to shop online even though you don't like it as much. The selection is, of course, vast. I rarely see a really nice set in a retail store.
