Blue and Lonesome vs Dirty Work...
You know, that's actually a tough one for me. Problem is, I've only been playing B&L for a couple of years, and I have hardly overplayed it - I'm not sure why. Whereas the last 4 Stones albums I played to death!!
DW is often ranked the lowest of ALL Stones albums. If it is not dead last its almost always in the bottom 3. I actually think its not that bad. To be it probably falls just inside the bottom 5. So don't go saying I'm praising it as a masterpiece or something like that. Because indeed I can name at least 20 Stones albums that are better. But DW has a solid rocker in One Hit (To The Body) as well as a fun dance song called Harlem Shuffle. And then there's Keith's Sleep Tonight which we've talked about here before, and which I like a lot.
For its 3 good songs, DW might just edge beat B&L by a hair, given that B&L is an album of covers. Its a fine album and I applaud them releasing it at this stage of their lives. But it may have only about 4 songs I am dying to hear. Its a great 'document' to me, a testimony, a homage, and tribute to the Blues. But DW, with its angst, intensity, and solid rock n roll just beats it barely.
Ask me in 4 years and i certainly might say something different.
