The kid shut down psychologically after a childhood of physical/sexual abuse.
It's just a story and shouldn't be over judged as we are doing here - but - that's what you do at message boards like this one, you talk about these things.
But every time something is noted to support the story, it's like, no - that wasn't it, or it couldn't have happen that way in real life. In the story line, no, he didn't go deaf, blind, and dumb because of a childhood of being abused. It was actually at that very point of his childhood, as he was becoming a man - that he was cured from those ills and could see, hear, and speak again!... It was only one thing that caused his becoming deaf, blind, and dumb, and that was being a witness to a murder at age 3 or 4, and guess what, nobody, even little kids, go blind, death, or dumb from such a thing. Yes, some very bad things can happen to a child (really anybody) who is a witness to such violence, but not that. He might have refused to talk or listen to anybody anymore over such an event, but he won't actually have those 3 things take place to his body, and that hasn't even happen before in that matter to anybody, ever.
I guess with me, I like a good story line that is at least half true, and the main story in Tommy wasn't close to anything real. Still, and again, great music and lyrics if you totally forget what the story behind it was.
