RE: RE: Long hair and work... nsc

Ive always worn my hair long except when employment conditions stopped me

I never, ever gave in to that kind of prejudice, and back in the '60s and all the way up to around the late '80s, that kind of prejudice against men was everywhere! Lucky for me, my old lady liked long hair on guys. Yet she was a hairstylist - and back when we lived in Telluride in the '80s, she was the only person in town who cut guy's hair for a cheap price, even if she hated short hair on guys, as she was a true hippie chick back in those days (really up to the day she passed away 7 years ago). So I would have to beg her for a haircut once a year back then, as she hated cutting my hair - really ever. But before she would cut off my long hair, she would braid it, then cut it off at the end, and keep the long braid, and then style my hair after that. But I didn't know she kept the braids, not until about 5 years ago when our oldest daughter found 2 of them in one of her mom's old boxes, along with another unbraided ponytail that came from a haircut she gave our oldest grandson. I can recalled when she gave the grandkid that haircut, since it was the boy's first ever haircut, I just don't recall her saving it, or saving my 2, either.

But getting back to what you just noted about work and getting a haircut for a job.... I would never cut my hair for any job. I would only cut my hair if I wanted it cut, as that's how it should be for not only females, but males, too.... My favorite long hair/work quotes, taken from my old home page are:

"And the sign says 'Long-haired freaky people need not apply' , so I put my hair up under my hat and I went in to ask him why. He said you look like a fine outstanding young man, I think you'll do, so I took off my hat, I said 'Imagine that, huh, me working for you'" - Les Emmerson from The Five Man Electrical Band song "Signs"

"I'm not going to change the way I look or the way I feel to conform to anything. I've always been a freak. So I've been a freak all my life and I have to live with that, you know. I'm one of those people" -  John Lennon

"Almost cut my hair, It happened just the other day, It was getting kind of long, I could have said it was in my way, But I didn't and I wonder why, I feel like letting my freak flag fly, I feel like I owe it to someone" - David Crosby, from the CSN&Y song "Almost Cut My Hair"

"If some short-haired, prejudice, 'you must play the game' type of boss, don't want to hire me to a job that I'm qualified for, simply because my hair is too long, then it's his loss, not mine" - Keno, 1974

I made the above comment to my dad when he told me he could set me up with a real good paying job at this firm in NYC that his friend owned - but I would have to cut off my long hair and be clean shaven to get it. But not only didn't I cut my hair, I never in my entire life took a job that somebody else could get me. Every job I ever had I had - I got it on my own.
