No Stones content here, folks. And yes, its a question that will doubtlessly invite some debate.
I'm genuinely curious as to how you all feel about the recent movement to 'ban' certain Christmas songs. The big one in the news now is the 1940s classic "Baby It's Cole Outside" by Frank Loesser
The main argument behind the proposed removal of this song from radio station playlists is that the song basically describes a man's attempt to convince a woman to stay at his home and have relations with him. He's begging her to stay, and at one point she asks "What's in this drink?" I just watched an interview with a radio station programmer who said his stations have received many complaint calls about the song, including songs from women who have been assaulted.
What we have to remember here is that there is no official ban on this song. Rather we are simply seeing private businesses react to complaints from the public. But its kind of odd, isn't it? We hear TONS of songs everyday that endorse and romanticize violence, and that objectify women (as well as men!) and we don't hear calls to stop playing those.
The other song on the chopping block is Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer. Different issues there, but google it sometime and you'll see the call for its discontinuation as a perennial classic.
