I'm a fan of Syd, some of his work was right there with the best at the time, the two mentioned here 'Arnold Layne' and 'See Emily Play', do it for me. As with the Kinks, I find Syd's work very 'English' in feel. Along with his subject matter, his lyrics have that necessary psychedelic idiosyncrasy about them, not many songs about nicking panties off of washing lines. A man should have a hobby, I guess.
There seem to be parallels between Syd and Peter Green to be drawn, in that both were slipping mentally, and a particular event seems to have put them over the edge. Both were dropping acid regularly, who knows if they were predisposed to mental health issues, and acid was perhaps the catalyst? Having been taking the stuff regularly for 6 or 7 years, I dropped my last tab in '76 following a run of bad trips. I'm o.k. I think lol.....be careful though, kiddies.
Peter thankfully had his Nigel to bring him back, Syd, I don't think, was ever coming back.
