I remember that day very well. I was in a large in hotel in Ottawa, Canada for a week of training for my job working with young offenders.
I don't know exactly how it was learned by one of the participants, but they said that there had just been a 'bombing' in New York and somewhere else. We took a break and I immediately went to my room and turned on the TV.
After the second tower was hit I knew what I was already starting to feel - that the world would never be quite the same.
They had a fire drill scheduled in the hotel for noon that day. They cancelled it. We actually resumed our training for a few hours and talked of what was going on the whole time. After ending the session for the day I was glued to the TV, and also called my family at home.
I do think that the USA and her allies have moved passed this. Bin Laden is long dead. ISIS rose up and has been crushed out. The USA went to waged war against a nation, Iraq, which neither threatened the US nor possessed any WMDs. This total misadventure happened at least partly due to 9/11, which I Iraq had no role in. Then there was the poor response from the Bush admin for Hurricane Katrina which killed thousands of Americans. My point is that I think we have realized that the biggest problem in the world is not terrorism, and when we look critically as some of the things we have done since 9/11 we see a lot of hypocrisy, in addition to downright exploitation of people's fears.
And now we have Trump....
