What is the criteria? Are we talking about these bands being 'the best' at something particular such as instrument playing? Song writing? Album production? Or is it just "the best" overall?
If is just overall greatness, then my list of what I see as 'the big 5'is a doubtlessly familiar.
THE ROLLING STONES
These are the best bands in the broad genre of modern popular music. There is really no one who can replace any of them on this list.
There are countless 'great bands'. The Beach Boys,The Band, The Eagles, The Byrds, ZZ Top, U2, The Verve, Motörhead, Van Halen to name just a few. But no one can touch these top 5, in my humble opinion.
Top 10 and top 100 lists always mention a couple of guys from the 1950s as being high on their list. As great as they may have been, they are more 'influencers' in my view and that alone is not greatness.
As you said 'bands' I tend to not list individual artists like Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, and Jimmi Hendrix, although I do recognize that their music did/does constitute the output of a 'band'. And similarly, there are many 'bands' where almost all the creativity comes from one person and they could just go by that one person's name. That said, the aforementioned solo artists would not be in my top 5 anyway, as awesome as they all are.
