RE: Aretha Franklin reportedly on her deathbed.

Yeah, I read this about her the day the news broke, sad news.

But now I wonder if the drugs were the cause, to some extent, of her massive weight loss.

Cancer causes weight loss on it's own when it hits you (well, depending on what kind of cancer you got, but most forms of C do that. I don't think skin cancer does) - then they give you these drugs that are poison and you lose more weight taking them.

Sadly I know too much about this disease. My oldest daughter Jackie has had a very rare form of blood cancer for almost 18 years now, and lung cancer killed her mother 7 years ago. The day her mom died, she weighed less than 90 pounds! With Jackie, she's just under 110 pounds, been that way for years now - and she has been on blood thinners and small doses of chemo for 17 years now. People who don't realise that she is sick - think she is a heroin addict since she's so skinny. But other than that, she doesn't look sick and she's still a good looking gal.

But can you imagine having to take poison every day of your life for 18 years? The kind of cancer she has (called essential thrombocytosis for short) is so very rare and strange. It will never go into remission, yet it doesn't kill you, either, at least not in the form it takes. But, it can turn into leukemia, and that will kill you, and many of the symptoms that you have with leukemia, you have with this form of cancer. It's also very painful to live with, your hands and feet hurt a lot from it, especially in the winter months, and many people lost one or more of their digits from it. Jack lost her right index finger years ago, yet it is strange how nobody ever notices it. If you ever known anybody who lost a finger, you understand what I mean. I also have a close friend and also a cousin who lost one finger each, and on them it's the same deal, you don't notice the loss unless you look for it. But still, nobody wants that to happen to them.
