Jazz Fusion

Despite being a huge fan of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Ella Fitzgerald, and Sammy Davis Jr,....

I consider Sammy Davis Jr. the greatest entertainer of all time (and Mick Jagger the greatest frontman.) I was a huge fan of Sammy's.

Many years ago I purchased a CD "Frank Sinatra with the Duke Ellington Orchestra". It wasn't the best sounding live album. It almost sounded like someone in the audience with a tape-recorder recording this. Well anyway, at one point in the show Franky is talking to the audience for a few minutes, mostly being funny. During that talk, he mentioned SDJr and, it wasn't all clear, I think he said, "Sammy I read your book and no you can't!" I didn't get it, but evidently the audience sure did because they laughed so loud, but I didn't get it. How was that funny?

Some time later I had a strong urge to read a book about SDJr. Now how's this for luck --- my wife says that at her job, people leave books in the lunchroom, and whoever wants to can take, or borrow, books from there. She SAW a book there, an autobiography, by SDJr.

You believe this? I got it the next day, and believe me I couldn't put it down! He titled his autobio book Yes I Can. It's an awesome book.

It took me a while to realize, thinking back to the Sinatra CD, that THAT's what Sinatra meant when he said "Sammy, no you can't", because of the book 'Yes I Can' and the audience gave a hearty laugh.

(SDJr mentioned in the book that when he was in England he hung out with The Rolling Stones. He said, They were cool.)

🗣You hear that everybody?? 👂🏻 SDJr said The Stones were cool! 😎

One more thing, Sinatra with the Duke Ellington Orch. is spectacular.

A lot of the great stuff from this genre came when Miles Davis was making stuff like Bitches Brew and other discs like it.

Wholeheartedly agree. I consider 'Bitches Brew' a pivotal milestone!

Weather Report are simply magnificent.

Wayne Shorter appears on 'Bridges to Babylon'!! Yeah.

Alex Acuņa was my favorite drummer (2 albums), so when the double-album 8:30 came out (1979), I was pissed to see he was gone. Who is this Peter Erskine guy. Well, I was new at Jazz but I eventually saw that Peter Erskine is quite ubiquitous in Jazz. Man his name was all over the place. (He's good too.)

Did you know that Al Di Meola and John MacLachan did an album together?

NO! I never knew that. 🙀 I know JM did an album with Carlos Santana, but not with AD. I gotta look into that.

I don't know if they still make great Jazz Fusion now, because I really haven't checked into the current state of things. I know they don't make much good Rock now. I doubt too many here would vehemently oppose that view.

My thoughts exactly!
