They are a lot of fun. I think what it is with me is that way back in the late 70s I fell in love with running. That foray didn't last too long, but the seeds were sown.
In the 80s I rekindled that little hobby, and it took off full blast. One major reason for the passion was now I had a Walkman, and a park with a walking path to run in, therefore no traffic to worry about, I can get lost in the music.
(believe me I needed all the help I can get, as I'm not at all gifted with athleticism, and those tapes helped big-time!)
I prepared 2-hour cassette tapes that I so enjoyed running to. And it included a lot of that type of music, the fun New-Wavy stuff from the 80s The Interrupters remind me of, which in turn reminded me of the great 60s fun music. It helped keeping me running --- just a cursory listen to these examples below to see what I mean, great for running to:
