Get Off of My Cloud/Exile vs GHS/Acid guitar songs

It’s time to get this week’s poll post going, starting off as usual with the Stones Poll, where we enter week 993, and where we always run 2 different Stones polls in one week for this poll. So this week’s first question asks this: Rate the Rolling Stones TV performance for "Get Off of My Cloud"

This week in the first Stones poll we continue to rate Stones videos, this time with a video which was actually a TV performance taken from the 1965 British TV show Top of the Pops and then was shown a week later on U.S. TV when this song was becoming a hit.

Brian played the lead guitar on this song with a 12 String electric guitar, but it looks like a 6 string is being used in this clip (it’s hard to tell, too, as we never see the guitar’s neck). Sounds like Mick is singing live here and Brian’s lead sound just a bit different than the record, but they may have re-record the song the night before in the studio for this TV show – something the Stones would sometimes do early on, on the rare occasions when they didn’t play live on TV. But up until 1967, they usually did play live on TV shows, yet I can hardly hear Keith’s guitar at all on this cut. Still, for 1965 this wasn’t bad at all; just wish that when they showed BJ, that they showed him playing his guitar more often than instead showing close up shots of his face and head instead. That’s something you can blame on the TV show producers from back in those days as they did that to all guitarists it seemed.

This next paragraph is a repeat from last week… but it’s still important, so let me note it again….: There will be a link to the video in the voting booth so you can view it before you vote. Do remember that yes, we are rating this video for this poll, so where I often say that the videos linked to at the voting booth are only there so you can hear the song before you vote - but don't vote on the video - well for this kind of question of course that doesn't apply at all, as you most definitely should vote 100% on what the video is all about for this question.

To cast your vote in this first poll, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

The Stones second poll is where we run the Stones album VS matchups each week, and this week’s question asks this: Exile On Main Street vs Goats Head Soup, which album do you like the best?

vs

This week we return to The Exile Polls, the first album series that we ever ran (but not the first Stones album VS poll battle run). Now here we have a great matchup that we somehow never ran before, one that we now finally get to vote on near the end of this long running series. I've noted in the last few months for this series, that most of the boring matches are the only ones left to run at this point, since it's so late in the voting and the best matchups have been run already. But once in a while we should see an exception to that rule, and here is a match that I just missed running early on, with 2 early ’70s releases that came out one after the other, so yes indeed, this should be a great matchup! In these matches so far, EOMS has one of the best records, in third place in the standings with 16 wins and only 2 loses. GHS isn’t doing too shabby either, with a winning record of 15-3, and sitting in 5th place.

To see the song list for each album, for Exile On Main Street, click on: EOMS, and for Goats Head Soup, click here: GHS.

To cast your vote in this second Stones poll, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

Looking back at our 2 Stones polls last week, at the first poll we answered this question: Rate the Rolling Stones video for "Don’t Stop"

Well, back to the bad ratings last week for the Stones videos, in fact this rating was so bad that only the rollercoaster video for “Paint it Black” scored lower, that one only managed a “3”, while this one went no higher than a “5” for its top vote, the second lowest rating for one of these polls. IMO, and to be honest, it deserved this poor rating that it got, while some of the other poorly rated Stones videos we rated in the past, didn’t.

To check out the full final results, just click here: Stones Weekly Poll - week 992, poll 1. Or, you can check out and see how all of the other videos that we have rated in the past have done by going here: Stones Fans Top Pick Lists - Page 2, under “Video Ratings”.

Looking back at last week’s second Stones poll, the question was: Emotional Rescue vs Bridges To Babylon, which album do you like the best?

vs

Well, I agreed with the outcome, as B2B was the only poorly made modern day Stones LP, one that really wasn’t too good at all. You can view the final results from this poll by clicking here:Stones Weekly Poll - week 992, poll 2. Or, you can see the final results and check out the updated, current album standings at the Stones VS Page 1.

Over at the Classic Rock Poll, this week we enter poll week 633, and we run 2 poll questions a week at this poll, too. For this week we have another brand new question to ask, a new multi week poll, which asks: Who played the best acid guitar heard in a rock song (Part 1 of 4)?

Now as I noted in last week's poll when we looked for the best all-around acid guitar player, don't get psychedelic and acid guitar playing mixed up. Remember, psychedelic guitar sounded a lot like acid guitar other than psychedelic guitar was more mellow, while acid guitar is not only more metal like and a lot louder, it's also where the heavy metal genre and heavy metal guitar all got started.

This poll question will run for 3 weeks with new songs to vote on each week, then the best will go up against each other in round 4…. Some of the songs listed have only a bit of acid guitar in them, but as long as there is some, they get listed. There are several songs, like "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" that has a combo of both psychedelic and acid guitar mixed (with more so a psychedelic guitar), but such songs will also make the list. Yet some of the best known and so called acid rock bands, like the Airplane and the Dead, or Pink Floyd, actually played little or no acid guitar, lots of psychedelic guitars in their songs, yes indeed, but not a lot of acid. So you won't see a lot of their songs listed in the next 3 weeks. But if by Part 3 you feel I missed an important acid guitar song by anybody, then please let me know asap.

If you are like me, you will look at the 24 songs listed each week while this question runs and what to pick 10 of these songs yourself each week instead of just picking one, that's how good some of the acid guitars are on these songs and how hard it will be to pick just one from the bunch!... This was a fun list to put together, so I hope it's gonna be a hit in the voting like last week's question clearly was.

So which song has the best acid guitar from this week’s list IYO? Just click here to make your pick: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

At the second Rock poll this week, known better as the Rock VS poll, we will vote on this question: “I Don't Need No Doctor” by Humble Pie vs “Doctor My Eyes” by Jackson Browne, which song in part about a doctor, is better?

vs

Sometime in the distance future at the main Rock poll, we will vote in a poll about songs that deal with doctor visits. But for now, here are 2 great songs about doctors for us to vote on in the VS poll. You can see by the title of the 1971 Humble Pie song, that no doctor was wanted, while Jackson Browne's song has him talking to his doctor.

As usual there's videos linked to at the voting booth to each song, and both of them are excellent live takes, but as I usually note, we are to rate the studio cut of the song for the sake of these polls, but both of the these vids are great indeed, just remember, for this poll we are not rating the videos at all.... just the songs get rated.

BTW, with the Humble Pie song/video, YouTube has the year down wrong for the video. The song itself was released in '71 when Peter Frampton was still the lead guitarist in the band and he did play lead on the studio cut that we are voting on. But in this live cut of the song, that isn't Pete playing lead, as he had just left the band when this was filmed, as this is more than likely in early 1973. There was a very cool video for this song from 1971 showing Peter on lead guitar and singing backups, which was on YouTube as late as last year, but I can no longer find it anymore. So we have to go with the take that's out there to link to.

The Jackson Browne hit song was released in 1972 and the video is from a live BBC show in '78 in London, with David Lindley playing a cool slide guitar on this take of the number.

So which these 2 doctors songs do you like better? To cast your vote, just click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

Looking back at last week’s first Rock poll, it asked: Who was the best acid guitar player in rock?

Jimi Hendrix won this one by several votes. Most of the rest of the guitarists were very close to each other in the voting with a few ties mixed in there. I very much agreed with the top 4 picks, including a 3 way tie for second, and I usually hate ties in these polls, but with Neil Young, Eric Clapton, and Jimmy Page all tying for second, I actually agree, as I can’t say myself who was better at playing this kind of music, all 3 were excellent and equals in mastering these electric riffs. I know, we can’t learn anything from ties, other than we can in this case, since all 3 were equals playing in this way for sure, at least according to our voters anyway!

Guess I should note that this question was a very popular one, as it set a new all-time voting turnout record for our polls last week! To see those full final results from this poll, just click here: Classic Rock Poll 1, week 632. You can also check out the results at this page Top Ten Lists, Page, 14, all the way at the bottom of the page.

In last week’s VS Rock poll, we answered this question: Tiebreaker poll: The Grateful Dead vs The Rolling Stones, who cut the best cover version of "Not Fade Away"?

vs

The Stones won this round! To see by how much, just click here: Rock VS Poll, week 632. You can also see the final results at the oldest VS Classic poll results page at the Classic Rock site, by clicking here: VS poll page 1, list page 8. It’s listed on this old page since that’s where the original VS results in 2013 landed and I see no reason to move them now.

Okay, let’s wrap up this poll post with the Beatles poll, where we enter week 386 of voting, and ask this new question: What is the best Beatles song that contains only one word in its title?

The Beatles had 25 such released songs that had only one single word in the title. Some were big hits while a few were barely known, released after the band broke up.

When we voted on this very same question at the Stones poll, we had a very nice turnout of voters, so let’s ask and answer it here now. To vote for the Beatles’ best single word title song, please go here: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week's Beatles poll we asked: Of The Beatles album's title cut songs, which is the best one?

This was another poll ran last week that had a very popular question. “A Hard Day's Night”, the song named after the LP - that was named after the movie, won and was ahead the entire week in the polling.

To see the poll’s full, final results, just click here: Beatles Weekly Poll – week 385. Plus the top pick will also show up on the Favorite Beatles Songs Page over at the Lennon site.

Okay, so another new week is underway and another poll post is finished. I thank all of you for voting in last week’s and this week’s polls, and especially for the record high turnout we saw last week in votes!
