It was in 1979 IIRC, it was one of those times in my life where, for a while, I was doing everything right -- lifestyle-wise. Exercising regularly, eating right, really getting healthy. (I still smoked though.)
It seems the body requires less sleep when you're making healthier choices.
So I woke up this one morning at 3:30AM!! WIDE AWAKE, no way I can get back to sleep.
So, I started exercising, quietly, and I put on long-time Progressive-Rock station WNEW-FM on the stereo --- at very low volume of course.
The overnight DeeJay was Fr. Tom Morera (not sure if he was a real priest) and believe me the few times I heard him, he was great!
So I got the station on, and what do I hear? This really deep head music, sort of a precursor to the future-named New Age music (the good kind). I checked the dial to make sure I had the correct frequency on. Yep, sure nuff it's on 102.7. So what the hell is this?
That piece of music ended, and Fr. Tom comes on and says it was Mickey Hart from a new solo album. Then I hear M.H.'s voice. He was there in the studio live!!! Being interviewed. Wow! Too bad I missed most of it, but check this out --- after a little while the deejay Fr. Tom says before MH goes, he'll spend a few minutes here in the studio taking phone calls off the air!
I ran downstairs (quietly) to the basement to use the other phone so I don't wake anybody up, especially the rent-paying tenants. I called and I got him right away.
Believe me Mickey Hart was a cool dude. 😎 We chatted for a little while, very pleasant guy, and one of the questions I asked him was about that new music I'd just heard. Is it influenced by psychedelic drugs? And he answered with a very lively "Yeah!"
