RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: GHS

A laid back mellower vibe to this release, but that doesn’t mean it’s less intense. I’m sure this was a curveball to their fans in 1973, following Exile and the 1972 US Tour. Maybe it has to do with where it was recorded, primarily in Jamaica.

Also it seems to be a more cohesive and collaborative effort from the band. The songs, are different, but they seem to flow together smoothly, unlike the disjointed Its Only Rock n Roll release.

Dancing with Mr D, a mildly slinky opener...with the dark foreboding edge...the outtake has a better guitar tone than the original release. Sinister and slinky, which fits the song perfectly, but for some reason is almost buried in the mix on the official release.

100 Years Ago, they gambled here, took a musical chance and out of their comfort zone and it pays off.

Coming Down Again, May well be Keith’s most personal and honest song.

Heartbreaker, a classic

Angie, another classic..showing a new maturity.

Silver Train, a jumbling rambling song with some country honky tonk thrown for good measure. I’ve read many regard this as a paint-by-the-numbers track, but who cares? Who does this sort of song better than the Stones?

Hide Your Love...a rockabilly rolling shanty.

Winter, a hidden gem. The kind of song you’re happy to discover. This is the song I think of when I think of deep cut gems on albums.

Can You Hear The Music, another song out of their comfort zone, the premise may be a bit too pretentious for them to really carry off. I like it, but I understand why some don’t.

Starfucker, a big nod to Chuck Berry, Stones Style. Always makes me smile, although the subject isn’t one I wanted played around my mother.

Overall Goats Head Soup is a release that has grown on me over the years. It is among my favorite albums...from a band with so many to choose from. It is a departure from the four preceding studio albums for sure, I liken it to hitting a triple after 4 straight home runs and some spectacular stolen base plays. Not as sexy as a home run, but nothing to sneeze at.”
