Disc jockeys and NYC (nsc)

Oh Murray the K was on WINS for sure, for many years. That's where he got his big break. He was there until they became all-news in 1965. Kaufman also worked for WMCA, as mentioned in musicradio77's website, in the bottom section called The End, and on NY Radio Archive with a NYT clip dated Oct 26th 1968. The writer wrote, I found it strange that Murray would join WMCA after quitting WOR-FM a year earlier over issues of creative freedom, but he did. His show seemed to be a mix of his own ideas and WMCA demands, but it seemed out of place. It didn't last very long.

He actually did two tours of duty on MCA. I didn't know that till now, I only remember the late 60s show, and I remember being surprised to hear him on there.

He had some incredible TV music specials, with a whole bunch of artists. It was a struggle for me to watch them as my parents weren't very happy with this kind of stuff taking up our television time. (It also didn't help at all that Jim Morrison was quite raunchy!)

While we're talking about radio - Like I mentioned above, Ultimate Oldies Radio ceased production just recently, (as did the aircheck site REELRADIO) but I managed to find their old message board. My user name was Shattered. I had asked a very interesting question there back in May 2011, and I got a great answer. I think you might find it interesting. Here is my question:

One website I've enjoyed for many years now is reelradio.com

They have hundreds of airchecks from the R&R era, both 'scoped & un'scoped. SO MUCH FUN!!!

It used to be all free, but they couldn't keep it up so they ask for a minimum of only $15 per year. Extremely well worth it.

Anywho, I'm born & raised here in New York, and one thing we had here in the 60s, and 70s too, is that we had awesome Disc Jockeys. AND many of them, if not most of them STAYED in New York, and for many years. Legends such as Jack Spector, Harry Harrison, Scott Muni, Cousin Bucie (Bruce Morrow), Ron Lundi, 'Dandy' Dan Daniels, Ed Bair, and the best of all DAN INGRAM, and others.

But listening to ReelRadio, I notice there were terrific DJs that never came to New York, legends like Jack Gale, Larry Lujack, 'The Real' Don Steele, Jack Armstrong, Jack Gale, Robert W. Morgan (not live anyway), Charlie Tuna, several other wonderful ones. Oh did I mention Jack Gale?

Well, what I was wondering is, why did they move around so much? I mean, they'd go from city to city, state to state. Are you kidding me? Hey, if I owned a radio station I would sure as heck do what I can to keep a Jack Gale & Jack Armstrong aboard!!!

So why did they move around so much? And how can they raise families that way?

And here was the best answer:

Shattered is right - ReelRadio is excellent, well worth the tiny annual fee.

Shattered also wrote....

So why did they move around so much?

Jim replied.....

Money I suppose! And bigger markets.

You were in New York, and you noticed that some of the top ones stayed there - but that was simply because once you had made it to New York, you were already at the top, so you stayed where you were!

Incidentally, could I add one more name to your New York listing - namely Dick Biondi, who worked on WKBW in Buffalo?

Brilliant voice, and still working on WLS 94.7 FM at the age of 79.

Getting back to moving - I myself worked in radio in Ireland from 1981 to 1995, and the guys who were making the real money were those willing to move on every so often to the bigger stations, and the bigger audiences.

If you were happy to come in, stay three years or so, and grow the audience, you were in demand and could command the bigger salaries and bigger opportunities.

Of course, once your career peaked, you started doing the same thing again - but in reverse!

The old joke about being nice to people on the way up, as you will be meeting them again on the way down, was never truer than it was in the radio business.

I think there was also a bit of pressure on you, if you did not seem too ambitious - as though you were "afraid of the big markets".

I guess "W.O.L.D" sort of sums it up!
