Stones & Fabs videos/Harmony singing/VS polls

About the only thing I find hard in writing up this weekly poll post, is how to open it up without repeating myself from week to week. I mean, after 977 weeks, just how many new and different ways are there to say that it’s time to get this week’s 5 weekly polls underway? Well, I guess I just opened this one in a different way. But anyway, this next bit I sure have written a few times before, reminding all that we start off talking about the Stones Poll, where this week we enter week 978 of polling, and as usual we always vote on 2 brand new poll questions in the one week. So this week’s first Stones question asks this: Rate the Rolling Stones video for “Start Me Up”

This week I re-start up the Stones video polls with the appropriate titled song "Start Me Up". But one thing to ponder, is why haven't the Stones videos been as highly rated as the Beatles vids have been? Maybe it's just because there are so many more Stones videos? No, I don’t think that’s it. I think it’s simply because the Beatles never put out any crazy videos like in the way the Stones have. Take that one of the crazy looking, very obese guy on the roller coaster with the little boy for "Paint it Black", as an example. Just what was that one even supposed to be about? It just came across as being so creepy with the way that guy was, and to take such a powerful, great song and do that to it, no wonder it got the lowest rating ever for any of our video polls (scored a 3). From what I've read online, and I don’t know if this is true, but that one came out about 15 to 20 years ago on some stupid TV show, so the Stones more than likely had nothing to do with making it. But the fact it was allowed to be widely circulated in their name, and still is to this day, you wonder why the Stones allowed that to be presented? I mean, it was shown as a Stones video on MTV and on other stations, and today still is on YouTube. The Stones could have stopped that being shown in their name if they wanted to. So there is some kind of connection somewhere there.

But let’s talk now about the current video that we are rating this week. "Start Me Up" was released in 1981 on Tattoo You, but it was written and first recorded way earlier, in January of 1978 for Some Girls, and at the time started out as a reggae song with over 25 takes of the song in that genre and titled "Never Stop", while there was only 2 takes of it played as a rock song. Then it was forgotten, until ’81 when the Stones needed to look at some old songs that were never finished years earlier to include on their made in pieces TY LP, as all but two of the songs were composed of studio outtakes recorded during the 1970s. For SMU, the Stones this time took the rock song route with it and it became a big hit for them in the early ‘80s. The video for the song was directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg, who Jagger hired and who told him that he wanted a MTV like video made for the song. Once made and released, it was shown often on the still new MTV, and within a couple of years a few NFL football teams started to use the song at the start of their games. So thanks to both the video and the NFL, the song just seemed to be played everywhere, even if some Stones fans grew to dislike it because of the NFL connection. I never understood that, as I always loved to hear it playing at the old Mile High Stadium before the Broncos kicked off.

Now before you vote, do remember that yes, we are rating videos in this poll, so where I usually say at my close for a poll, that the videos are only there so you can hear the song before you vote - but don't vote on the video - well for this kind of question that doesn't apply at all, as you most definitely should vote 100% on what the video is all about for this question.

So just how will you rate this MTV like video? To cast your vote in this first poll, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

Now before I close out this first poll, a note about the Stones polls as I look ahead. We will, in 4 weeks’ from now, after the Stones video polls run in this main, first poll, vote on the final 4 albums that haven't hosted the Stones album VS series yet in those polls. Since we are almost done with that series, we will run these 4 LP’s series - for the following 8 weeks in a row (or 2 weeks for each new series). It’s either doing it in this way or one or 2 albums won't get a chance at hosting a new series, and I want all of them to host at least one series. After that we will wrap up the series via the second poll of the week, where we usually run these polls. But as far as the first Stones poll goes, that means with the next 4 weeks going to video polls and then the next 8 weeks for the final new VS series, that will leave only 11 weeks of voting left for the new Stones polls to do. Since the Stones have so many great videos that I had already decided we would still vote on, we will do several more of them before the weeks run out. That means last week's Bill Wyman question just might have been the last week of brand new non 'album VS polls', or video questions, that we will get to vote on in the Stones poll. However, as is the case in this week's Rock VS poll, I will still ask questions that the Stones will come up in at the other 2 polls from time to time. So while the weekly Stones poll is gonna be ending after 1,000 weeks, the Stones questions still will happen every so often at the other polls on the domain.

Now to the second Stones poll, where we run the Stones album VS matchups each week, and the new question is: Black 'n Blue vs Sticky Fingers, which album do you like the best?

vs

The “Black 'n Blue Polls” featuring the 1976 Stones LP Black 'n Blue returns to the battle this week with one of the poorest records in these matchups, with only 3 wins against 14 losses, and all the way down tied in 20th place in the standings. No, this one was perhaps the most un-Stones sounding album that the band ever made. This week it takes on one of the most loved Stones albums and the only undefeated LP in these matches, Sticky Fingers, at 17-0 and in first place in the standings. Okay, I realize all of us already know which LP will be on top when this one is all over, but none of us knows by just how much. A landslide finish you predict?.... Okay, but still, by just how much of a landslide? Just maybe BnB will put up more votes than one might expect, especially if many SF fans decided this one ain't worth voting in. So make sure you do vote!

To cast your vote in this second Stones poll, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

At the first Stones poll last week we answered this question: “In Another Land” vs “Downtown Suzie”. Which Bill Wyman Stones song is better?

All 5 polls that we voted on last week were close, the way I think we all like it. This first poll was close for sure, but I was surprised at what is to me clearly the better Bill Wyman Stones song (DS), not to be the one picked by my fellow fans. Sorry, but I barely even like the one that won out (IAL). You can click here to see the final results: Stones Weekly Poll - week 977, poll 1. Or, you can see the final results at the Stones VS List Page 2 under “Battle of the Stones Songs”.

Looking back at last week’s second Stones poll, the question was: December's Children vs Voodoo Lounge, which album do you like the best?

vs

Again, a very close battle all week long in this poll too. So which LP came out on top when the polls closed? To find out, just click here:Stones Weekly Poll - week 977, poll 2. Or, you can see the final results and check out the updated, current album standings at the Stones VS Page 1.

Over at the Classic Rock Poll this week we enter poll week 618, and just like as we do at the Stones poll, we vote in 2 poll questions a week in this one too. The first poll’s question this week asks this: Who were the best harmony vocalists singing in a song? (Part 5 of 10)

The fifth week of polling on this question, with 27 more great choices to choose from and vote on. Really, wait till you see this week’s list, it’s gonna be hard to pick just one out of this bunch. To vote in this poll and make your pick for this week, just click here: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

At the second Rock poll this week, known better as the Rock VS poll, we will vote on this new question: “Fingerprint File” by the Stones vs “The Crunge” by Led Zeppelin, which funk song by a non-funk band is better?

VS

When you think of Led Zeppelin or the Rolling Stones, you don't think of either band as ever playing funk music. But they both have, and these 2 well known songs are a great example of that. "The Crunge" by Led Zeppelin came first, in 1973, with Led Zep sounding very much like James Brown on this one. Then a year later the Stones delivered us "Fingerprint File", which some look at as an early rap like song - lyric wise, but unlike rap or hip-hop, the sound is pure funk.

As usual, video links to the songs - so you can hear the songs before you vote, are available at the voting booth, but just remember, don’t rate the video for this question, just the music you hear. To cast your vote, just click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

Looking back at last week’s first Rock poll, we answered Part 4 of this question: Who were the best harmony vocalists singing in a song? (Part 4 of 10)

In last week’s round, we saw a 2 way tie for third place, so 4 songs move on to round 10 from this part. They are: “Sun King” - Harmonies by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison (on the The Beatles song, at 10.7% of the vote). “The Weight” - Harmonies by Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel (on The Band's song, at 6.8%), “Carry On” - Harmonies by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (on the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young song, at 6.7%) and “Help Me, Rhonda” - Harmonies: Brian, Carl, & Dennis Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine (on The Beach Boys song, also at 6.7%).

To see the full, final results from this poll, just click here: Classic Rock Poll 1, week 617.

In last week’s VS Rock poll, we answered this question: "I Fought the Law” by the Bobby Fuller Four vs “I Fought the Law” by the Clash, which version of this song is better?

VS

Oh well, it was bound to happen sooner or later, and I can’t recall when we last saw a tie for first in these VS Rock polls, but that’s what took place last week. To see the final results, click here: Rock Poll 2, week 617. You can also check out the final results at the VS Classic poll results page at the Classic Rock site, by clicking here: VS poll page 3, list page 15.

We close out this poll post as usual with the Beatles poll, where we enter week 371 of polling, and ask this new question: Rate the Beatles official video for “We Can Work It Out”

This week we look at yet another of the very first rock videos made, that at the time were called "Promotional Film Clips". John Lennon didn't care for making them back then since he wanted to play live, and you didn't do that in these short films. So in this particular film (which is really one of the first music videos), you can see that John doesn't take what is going on too seriously at all. Still, the band comes off looking fine in this medium and this would be what all rock and country artists would be doing with their new songs in the future.

Now a repeat from the first 4 weeks, and this is what I also noted above in the Stones poll, just written a bit shorter here, that before you vote, remember we are rating videos in this poll, so you most definitely should vote 100% on what the video is all about for this question.

To see the video, and to vote and rate it, please go here: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week's Beatles poll we asked: Rate the Beatles official video for “Something”.

Boy, that video was something, wasn’t it!? Now, just like what we saw 2 weeks ago, for this video spots 8 thru 10 saw the overwhelming number of the votes and yes, a perfect 10 was the top pick.

To see the final results from this poll, click here: Beatles Weekly Poll – week 370. Or, you can check out the final results at: The Beatles Videos and Movies Page, which is located at the domain’s Lennon Site.

And so now it’s time to close out another week’s poll post. I’ll do that with some interesting board news, I’ve been told by 2 different programmers that they believe there just might not be anything wrong with this old board after all, other than that it is outdated. The problem with the missing posts, according to them, is that the database is at fault. After all, no code was ever changed anywhere in the program by anybody, and this sudden problem was never an issue before last December. So I got the domain’s host looking into it, it will be interesting to know if that is what the problem is.

As always, thanks to all of you for voting in this week and last week’s polls!
