About 4 years ago and at the same age, my mom said and did the very same thing, and then she passed away 2 days later. Although death is final, it's better than staying alive and being in pain every day for 24 hours a day, especially when you hit your 90s and just about everybody in your generation has already died but you. In Barbara's case, she still had her husband, but again, when you're hurting nonstop 24/7 and the doctor tells you it's another major surgery or you will be dead in a week (but there's no guarantee that they can save you anyway, either), you welcome death over that choice. Still your family doesn't want to lose you, no matter how old you are, but when your time is up, it's up, and why live on in pain? So it's totally understandable and the right choice to make if you feel you have to give up. Plus like my mom, Barbara believed in a god and that she would see her loved ones after she died. I don't believe that myself, yet I think I would make the same choice anyway. Who wants to live in pain 24/7 with no hope at all? It's like your body at that point, once you say "enough", allows you to die real fast.
