On-going polls, including Rock Hall votes

Okay, so once a year I like to talk about our Ongoing polls that we vote on at the Poll Menu page. There are a total of 17 of them, including 6 for the Stones, 6 for the Rock site, and 5 for the Beatles. Unlike the weekly polls, these polls run all of the time and you can vote once a year in them.

These polls started up back in 1999, other than the Rock ’n Roll Hall of Fame poll that got underway in 2009, 10 years later. So it doesn't have as many votes cast for that reason, yet it brings in as much interest as the most popular question does - especially this time of year when the new members get into the Hall. That of course happened this last weekend and usually each year for this week I run a weekly Rock poll question about the new artist who got in, and then a second poll the next week, I ask who should get in who isn't in yet. But I didn't run those 2 weekly poll questions this year since we’re in the middle of running a 10 week popular question right now and I didn't want to interfere with that.

So for that Rock Hall poll, the question asks: Of the Artists in the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame, who should not be in there? All of the performing artists who are in the Hall are listed. I do not list non performing artists in this poll who also got in. As of tonight, this poll has a total of 10,409 votes cast so far, with half of the top 10 artists that our voters feel shouldn't be in there all coming from the Rap/Hip Hop genre. There is no question that most of our voters are Classic Rock fans, since these rock polls run on the/a Classic Rock site, so that would make sense. The top vote getter out of the bunch listed is the pop group ABBA, with 14.9% of all the votes, and they have been the number one pick since the poll started up in December of '09. After them, here is the rest of the Top 10 (and a note, for artists who got into the Hall after the poll was started up, that is noted too): Run-D.M.C. (11.4%), Blondie (10.6%), Beastie Boys (added 4/11/12) (10.3%), Public Enemy (added 4/19/13) (8.8%), N.W.A. (added 4/4/16) (7.7%), Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five (7.4%), Madonna (7.3%), The Sex Pistols (2.2%), and Parliament-Funkadelic (2%).

Of that list, while Blondie has always been in third place since the polling started, it appears in short time that the 2 newest rap groups added in, Public Enemy and N.W.A., will pass them in the next year or so. N.W.A. only was added to the Hall in 2016 and has seen the most votes ever cast for a 2 year period. It seems to be normal for one of the new artists added in each year to get a lot of votes - especially if they are a Hip-hop group. Last year the lone such artist was rapper Tupac Shakur (aka 2Pac), who by most fans of hip hop feel was the greatest rapper ever, yet he picked up 95 votes last year (or 0.9% of the overall votes), placing him in 13th place already. However, he did not see the most votes cast last year, as N.E.A. did for the second year in a row. They had over 400 votes in their first year alone as it was. But do note that this year no rap/hip-hop artist got in, so I got a feeling a group like N.W. A. will continue to see a lot of votes this year. Of the new artists who got in last weekend, and who were added to this list a week ago, only Bon Jovi has gotten any votes so far (2).

One last note is that in the last year, one artist that made the Top 10 in their very first year - KISS (in 2014), is now no longer in the Top 10 anymore, in 11th place at 1.6%, with the Red Hot Chili Peppers (another hip-hop group, and added in 2012, and at 1%) still seeing a lot of new votes each year (while KISS no longer does), and again 2Pac just behind them at 0.9%. So my guess is that KISS, while getting a ton of votes in their first year only, will never again be in the Top 10 again.

Okay, let's look at the other 5 Rock polls in this group. The most popular Rock poll as far as the Ongoing polls goes (and second most voted on overall), is asking: What Is Your Favorite All Time Rock Band Or Group? With 51,319 votes since when it started up in October of 1999 (note that all of the other polls started in 1999, some in July of that year). The Beatles have always lead this poll and still do today, at 18.5%. The Stones are in second at 16%, with Led Zeppelin in third at 6.3%. Rounding out the rest of the Top 10 are: Pink Floyd (4.3%), The Who (3.3%), AC/DC (3.2%), The Doors (1594 votes at 3.1%), Queen (1586 votes and also at 3.1%), Aerosmith (1572 and once again at 3.1%), and The Grateful Dead (2.8%).

Next up in the Rock polls is this question: Who Is Your Favorite All Time Male Vocalist? 34,972 votes have been cast in this one. John Lennon had always lead this poll by a nice margin over Mick Jagger who’s always been in second, with Lennon at 17.3% and Jagger at 12.9%. Then the next 8 picks are: Freddie Mercury (5.7%), Elvis Presley (4.7%), Robert Plant (4.7%), Jim Morrison (4.2%), Paul McCartney (3.5%), Bob Dylan (2.8%), Elton John (945 votes and 2.7%), and Rodger Daltrey (944 votes and also at 2.7%).

Next poll asks: Who Is Your Favorite All Time Solo Artist? with 21,419 votes in. Bob Dylan has been in first place since this poll first started out, at 12.6%. The next 9 picks are: Jimi Hendrix, 2079 votes, 9.7%; John Lennon, 2073 votes, also at 9.7%; David Bowie, 6.4%; Eric Clapton, 5.5%; Neil Young , 5.4%; Elvis Presley, 1041 votes at 4.9%; Bruce Springsteen, 1040 votes and also at 4.9%, Elton John, 4.5%; and Paul McCartney at 4.4%.

Then next we have this question: What Is Your Favorite All Time Rock Duo? bringing in 14,163 votes so far. Simon & Garfunkel has not only lead since the first day this poll went online, but leads in the only major landslide results for any of these 6 Rock polls with 51.3% of the votes! The rest of the Top 10 who are all far behind them are: Page & Plant (10.5%), John Lennon & Yoko Ono (5.6%), Steely Dan (4.9%), the Everly Brothers (2.7%), Jan & Dean (325 votes , at 2.3%), Ike & Tina Turner (324 votes, also at 2.3%, Crosby & Nash (2.2%), and in the last spot of the Top 10 are Tyrannosaurus Rex (269 votes, at 1.9%), Sam & Dave (267 votes, tied at 1.9%), and officially out of the top 10 in total votes but still in by percentage is the Righteous Brothers (264 votes, at 1.9%).

The last Rock poll question is this one: Who Is Your Favorite All Time Female Vocalist? gathering 17,014 votes so far. Janis Joplin had always lead this one and some might call her lead a landside too, at 26.5% of the vote, while Aretha Franklin in second has 14.1%. The next 8 are: Stevie Nicks (6.3%), Grace Slick (566 votes, at 3.3%), Joni Mitchell (556 votes and also at 3.3%), Tina Turner (3.2%), Chrissie Hynde (2.6%), Sarah McLachlan ( 2.4%), and then Madonna (380 votes at 2.2%) and at the same percentage with 370 votes each are Alanis Morisstte and Sheryl Crow.

Now let’s move on to the Stones Ongoing polls. The most voted on poll on the domain and for all of the 17 Ongoing polls is found here and asks this question: What Is Your Favorite Rolling Stones Song?, taking in 53,006 votes to date! The top song picked…. Well maybe you guessed it, is… “Sympathy for the Devil” at 6.8%. The next 9 spots in the Top 10 list 11 songs and are: Gimme Shelter (5.8%), Jumpin' Jack Flash (5.2%), (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction (5%), Paint It Black (4.6%), Brown Sugar (1169 votes at 2.2%), Can't You Hear Me Knockin' (1168/2.2%), Beast Of Burden (1150/2.2%), You Can't Always Get What You Want (1140/2.2%) and the 10th spot sees “Tumbling Dice” with 1121 votes, but is tied percentage wise at 2.1% with “Honky Tonk Women” (1096 votes) and “Angie” (1090 votes).

Next Stones poll in popularly asks:What Is Your Favorite Rolling Stones Studio Album? with 26,123 votes in so far. You won’t be too surprise by this list of the Top 10 at all, with 4 LPs each from the ‘60s and ‘70s included, other than just maybe a bit surprised with spots 7 thru 10. Here they are: Exile On Main Street 23.1%, Sticky Fingers 19.7%, Let It Bleed 16.6%, Beggars Banquet 12.8%, Some Girls 4.6%, Goats Head Soup 3.6%, Aftermath 3.5%, 12 x 5 1.7%, Their Satanic Majesties Request 1.6%, and Voodoo Lounge 1.4%.

Then we got this question with 17,131 votes cast so far: Who Is Your Favorite Member of the Rolling Stones? Their order is: Keith Richards (36.8%), Mick Jagger (28%), Brian Jones (16.4%), Charlie Watts (7.3%), Mick Taylor (5%), Bill Wyman (3.7%), and Ron Wood (2.7%).

Next question asks:What Is Your Favorite Live Stones Album? with 17,146 votes, with actually just a few more votes than the last question had. The Top 10 order is: Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out! 36.6%, Stripped 12.8%, Flashpoint 12.3%, Love You Live 11.4%, Rock & Roll Circus 5.6%, Got Live If You Want It 4.9%, Live Licks (added 11-02-04) 4.6%, Still Life 4.5%, No Security 3.9%, and Shine a Light (added 4-02-08) at 3.3%.

One thing that all of the 17 Ongoing polls have in common are that the negative questions all get the least amount of votes, including for the Stones Poll. So next up is this question: What Is Your Least Favorite Rolling Stones Studio Album? with 12,128 votes in. For the negative poll questions I’ll just list the top 5, and for this one… well yes, you already know what album is first and that we have a major landslide pick for that spot, with the hated (or very much disliked LP) Dirty Work seeing 41.3% of the votes. The next 4 are: Undercover 8%, Steel Wheels 7.6%, Their Satanic Majesties Request 6.9%, and Bridges To Babylon at 6.6%.

Our least voted on Stones poll with 8,558 votes asks: What Is Your Least Favorite Rolling Stones Song?. I’ll again only list the Top 5 and I strongly disagree with the first 4, but some real good to great songs will always have some people who just don’t like them. Here they are: (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction (yes, you read that right) at 5%, Emotional Rescue at 3.3%, Angie 2.6%. “Anybody Seen My Baby” and “Back To Zero” both have 2.3% of the vote with ABSMB having one more vote than BTZ.

Last but not least are the 5 Ongoing Beatle polls. The most popular one out of the five and the third most voted on poll on the domain with 39,295 votes, and asks this question: What Is Your Favorite Beatles Song? “A Day In The Life” has always been in first place for this poll at 8.8% of the vote. The next 9 are: Hey Jude 6.9%, Strawberry Fields Forever 5.7%, In My Life 3.4%, Let It Be 3.1%, Revolution (fast version) 1191 votes and at 3%, While My Guitar Gently Weeps 1170 votes and also at 3%, I Am The Walrus 2.8%, Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) 2.6%, and Here Comes The Sun with 961 votes ties with 2.4% with Across The Universe at 928 votes.

Next most popular Beatles question, with 28,647 votes asks: What Is Your Favorite Original Beatles Studio Album? In very close voting, and this is one poll where the lead has changed more than once since 1999, and for now the top pick is Abbey Road with 5,298 votes and 18.5% of the vote, while The White Album (aka The Beatles) places with 5,152 votes and 18% of the vote. The next 8 LPs are: Revolver 15.1%, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band 13.2%, Rubber Soul 11%, A Hard Day's Night 7.2%, Let It Be 5.8%, Magical Mystery Tour 3.2%, Help!, 2.8%, and Please Please Me at 1.1%.

Then the next poll up with 17,219 votes is this one: Who Is Your Favorite Member Of The Beatles? I bet you can guess the order, which is: John Lennon (in a landslide at 43%); Paul McCartney (24.6%); George Harrison (22.2%), and Ringo Starr (10.2%).

Then the negative 2 questions are all that is left to report. First we have this question that asks: What Is Your Least Favorite Beatles Song? with only 9,722 votes cast. I’m not surprised by the top pick even if I disagree with it, as the second pick is my top choice, and then one of their greatest songs ever comes in 4th place (there’s a lot of people out there with some real bad hearing I see, that’s clear). So the Top 5 are: Revolution 9 (15.5%), A Taste Of Honey (6.6%), Yellow Submarine (4.2%), A Day In The Life (Blasphemy! at 3.3%), and Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da (2.8%).

Finally, and I’ve said it before about Beatles fans, is that it’s real hard for us Fab fans to vote on anything negative about the Beatles. So the least voted on poll on the domain asks this question: What Is Your Least Favorite Beatles Studio Album? with just 8117 votes. Like the Stones least favorite LP, the Beatles have one that everybody seems to dislike, too. Only difference is that this LP is only half a Beatles LP and the songs that the Beatles contributed to it are well liked, while side 2 is not the Beatles or their songs at all, and are not even Rock music. So in first place in a landslide is Yellow Submarine with 38.4% of the vote. The next 4 LPs picked are: Beatles for Sale 7.8%, Let It Be 6.5%, Early Beatles 5.7%, and a totally ridiculous pick for 5th place is the great and masterpiece double LP The White Album (aka The Beatles) at 5%.

So that does it for this year’s On Going Polls wrap-up. If you would like to see any of these polls total results so far, or if you haven’t voted in the last year at these polls… or ever, you can do so by going here at the Poll Menu page.

I thank all of you who has supported our polls throughout the 19 years they have been running, and yes, while the weekly polls will only run for 1,000 weeks each, the Ongoing polls never will end – well, not as long as I’m still breathing, anyway.

It took almost 3 hours to put this post together, so I hope at least a few of you will leave a comment below as to what you think about any of these results. For whatever reason, while our weekly polls keep growing in popularly, the weekly poll posts for them never seems to get a lot of comments here, something I never understood. Well, other than it’s clear that most voters aren’t Gassers, other than for those who vote in the Stones polls. Yet I would think what is written each week has several things to talk about. Oh well, some things in life are hard to figure out, Ronnie!
