There would be many such countries where this was so with local celebrities that you and I would not even know about. The Middle East for sure would be a place where MJ and company could go and not be noticed - but then who the hell wants to go there?

None of the classic rock acts ever needed the web of course, since there was no such thing when they all made it big. It was air time on the radio that got them famous and made them big. I guess YouTube today helps the newer acts to some degree, but even a lot of them still get known via the radio.
