An L.A. mid-late 60's band somewhat equivalent to VU for being huge locally but largely overlooked elsewhere until years later was Love, Arthur Lee's band. And on a more global level, Small Faces being huge in Europe but a one-hit wonder in the states, albeit now with a larger recognition on this side of the pond.
