I'm still not finished with the Wenner book but I'm through it enough to see the history of music just a little differently. Rolling Stone was extremely important back in the day, and Wenner was friendly with Jagger, and both the magazine and the band used each other unabashedly to push up and prop up their own success and exposure. This might seem like old news to many here, but just being a general reader of the magazine back then doesn't let you in on the personal dynamics that this new Wenner book does. Those dynamics are responsible for a great deal and they also fueled a deliberate and calculated elevation of John Lennon to mythical status after his death, due to Wenner's close relationship with Ono during and after that time and his own biased history with Lennon. You might think that Rolling Stone was just one of many magazines and books, etc. that contributed to his memory, but how we talk about, remember and defend Lennon to this day on this board might have more to do with the mutual agreement by powerful individuals and their zealous policing of his legend than you think. (see pages 390-402)
By the way, I didn't know that Rolling Stone and the Rolling Stones drew up a six-page legal document, finally, in the early 80s to deal with trademark and use issues of the words "Rolling" and Stone(s)" in realms outside of music and magazines.
