Aside from keeping time, to me the mark of a really great drummer is the art of the "fill." Not bombastic ones with pummeling, more artsy and subtle and effective. I like Peart a lot, but I'm not as big on Moon, Bonham, and the like. Guys like Spencer Dryden and John Densmore are more my style. And of course, Charlie. Cool fills are so interesting because they shake things up just enough without disrupting the song. And one of my favorite bands ever, the Cocteau Twins, used a drum machine on almost all their stuff without suffering any lapse in quality or interest whatsoever!
