B2B/SF/Aftermath/Spoken words in songs/more

It’s time to get this week’s poll post going, starting off as usual with the Stones Poll, where we enter week 969 of this poll, and as usual we will vote in 2 brand new polls. So this week’s first Stones question asks this: Which is the most underrated song on the Stones Bridges To Babylon album?

There are only 3 Stones studio LPs that I never play, and this is one of them (the other 2 are DW and SW). Released in 1997, this one has 13 songs on it, and I believe most fans shouldn’t have a hard time finding a song that was underrated on this one, since nobody really gave it high praise when the LP came out. Now there are at least a few good one on here…. right?

To see the song list for the songs on Bridges To Babylon, just click here: B2B.

To cast your vote in this first poll, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

The second Stones poll is where we run the Stones album VS matchups, and this week we ask this question: Sticky Fingers vs Aftermath, which album do you like the best?

vs or

This week the Stones album VS poll revisits The Sticky Polls, featuring the 1971 LP Sticky Fingers. This album is the only one out of all the Stones’ LPs to have a perfect record in these matchups, yes indeed, undefeated at 16-0 and of course in first place in the standings. So do you think any of the remaining LPs that still have to go up against SF, can beat it? Well time will tell, and this week it takes on a very popular ‘60s era LP, Aftermath. The 1966 album is doing pretty good itself in these battles, sporting a record of 10-5, placing it in 8th place in those same standings. Plus just a reminder, when we deal with the ‘60s LPs where there were both a UK and U.S. release, just go with the release you know better when you vote, but do not consider both of them.

To see the song list for each album, for Sticky Fingers, click here: SF. For Aftermath, click on: Aftermath US or Aftermath UK.

To cast your vote in this second Stones poll, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

At the first Stones poll last week we answered this question: Which is the most underrated song on the Stones Voodoo Lounge album?

Damn was this one close all week, with 11 of the 15 songs in a close race; but one song did lead for the entire week, not by much, and on a few days by only a vote or 2. But “Blinded by Rainbows” held on to be chosen as the most underrated tune on this LP. To see the full, final results, click on Stones Weekly Poll - week 968, poll 1. Or, you can see the top pick from this poll and the other Stones songs picked from the other albums we already voted on for this question, here: Stones Fans Picks Page 1. It’s listed about a third of the way down on the page, just before the “Songs only” lists starts.

Looking back at last week’s second Stones poll, the question was: Exile On Main Street vs 12x5, which album do you like the best?

vs

Okay, so do I need to write anything else here other than that EOMS won in a landslide? Didn’t think so, but to see by how big a landslide it came in first by, just click here:Stones Weekly Poll - week 968, poll 2. Plus, I’ll add the results from this poll to the standings at the Stones VS Page 1, where at the top of the page you can check out the updated standings on how each album has done in these long running VS polls.

Over at the Classic Rock Poll we enter poll week 609, and just like as we do at the Stones poll, we vote in 2 poll questions a week in this one too. The first poll’s question this week asks this: Of the Rock songs with spoken words in them, on which song do they sound best? (Part 3 of 3)

Part 3, and the final part of this rock question, where we are looking at songs that have spoken words in them. But to remind everybody, we are not looking for your favorite song from the 27 songs you will choose from this week, but we are asking for on which songs did the spoken words work out and sound best on.

Now one reason to run multi week polls is so there aren’t too many choices to choose from, as some questions come with many choices. So a 3 part poll should have 20 choices listed for the final round, since we take the top 10 finishers from Parts 1 and 2. But not this week, as for this part 3, thanks to very close voting in both Parts 1 and 2, well both weeks had a bunch of ties for the last spot, so we got 27 songs to choose from this week.

Now this next bit is repeated from last week: Since space is limited in the poll's voting booth for text, I brought back that old page I use once in a blue moon where I can list, in this case, the entire lyrics that were spoken, since I can’t get all of them to fit in the poll’s choice field. So you can go to this special page to see what was spoken, for the songs that don’t have any text showing in the voting booth. The link to these songs’ with talking lyrics will be found up on top in the poll's question field – it’s very easy to find.

To vote in this poll and make your pick for the best spoken words in a song, click here: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

At the second Rock poll this week, known better as the Rock VS poll, we will vote on this new question: "High and Dry" by The Rolling Stones vs "High 'n' Dry" by Def Leppard, which one of these 2 different songs with the same title, is better?

vs

One last question (for a while anyway) with the series called “Same Title, Different Song” Polls, where we take 2 songs that are totally different from each other as far as their lyrics go, and the only one thing they have in common, is the songs have the same titles. Then we just ask for the better song of the two.

Some might argue that these 2 songs have different titles, and spelling wise, yes, they do. But when you pronounce the titles, they are spoken exactly the same way. Now yes, the Def Leppard song does have a subtitle to it (Saturday Night), too, but the main tile is all that matters when we ask this poll question.

The Def Leppard song is the better known track to rock fans, as the Stones song is no question, a deep track. But anyway, these 2 songs are total opposites of each other. The Stones ditty is a country blues number while the Def Leppard song is 100% hard rock/metal.

For the Stones "High and Dry", released in 1966, this song is yet another one of the those tunes that is 99% a true Brian Jones number, music wise, thanks this time to his harp. Really, you could say that for 6 of the 11 songs on the album that this song appeared on, Aftermath.

For Def Leppard’s "High 'n' Dry", it was released in 1981 and was the title cut from their multi-platinum third album. This song's biggest fame came from being included on the "Filthy Fifteen", a list of songs criticized and targeted by the ridiculous and totally useless “Parents Music Resource Center”, an American committee formed in 1985. If you were around back then and are an American, this should help you remember the horror of the Regan years and the far right wing in the U.S. raising up everywhere it seemed, while trying to take freedom away from the average person, and while blaming rock music for everything that was wrong at the time.

To vote for your favorite of the 2 songs, just click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

Looking back at last week’s first Rock poll, we asked: Of the Rock songs with spoken words in them, in which one do they sound the best on? (Part 2 of 3)

You know how I have said often enough here how much I hate ties, especially for first place. But the good thing for multi part polls is that ties don’t really matter too much, as long as they aren’t happening in the final week, or unless there are several ties for the last place spot in Parts 1 and 2, and for the second week in a row, that was the case with this question. But the ties were everywhere last week in the top 10, a 2 way tie for first, a six way tie for third, and another 6 way tie for the last spot, to give us 14 songs in the top 10. Those songs are: “Are You Lonesome Tonight” - Elvis Presley (6.1%); “Atlantis” - Donovan (6.1%); “Ain't No Mountain High Enough” - Diana Ross (5.8%); “Fire” - Arthur Brown (5.8%); “Leader of the Pack” - The Shangri-Las (5.8%); “Little Red Riding Hood” - Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs (5.8%); “Paradise by the Dashboard Light” - Meat Loaf (5.8%); The End - The Doors (5.8%); “(You're my) Soul And Inspiration - The Righteous Brothers (5.7%); “A Boy Named Sue” - Johnny Cash (5.7%); “Chestnut Mare” - The Byrds (5.7%); “Elected” - Alice Cooper Group (5.7%); “The Cover of Rolling Stone - Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show (5.7%); Two of Us - The Beatles (5.7%).

To see the full, final results from this poll, just click here: Classic Rock Poll 1, week 608. The top 10 results from the final round will also show up on the Top Ten Lists, Page, 14, after that poll is run.

In last week’s VS Rock poll, we answered this question: " So Far Away" by Carole King vs "So Far Away" by Dire Straits, which one of these 2 different songs with the same title, is better?

vs

A somewhat close poll in this race, but still, the Carole King song lead for the entire week and never did give up the lead, winning in the end by 8 votes. To see the results, click here: Rock Poll 2, week 608. You can also check out the final results at the VS Classic poll results page at the Classic Rock site, by clicking here: VS poll page 3, list page 15.

We close out this poll post in the usual way, with the Beatles poll, where we enter week 362, and ask this question: Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band vs With the Beatles, which album do you like the best?

VS

Week 5 of the "Lonely Hearts Club Band’s polls” and this week Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band takes on the Beatles second release, With the Beatles. This 1963 LP contains 14 excellent songs on it. In this series its record is 2-3, so it looks to climb to the 500 marker after the week is out. For Sgt. Pepper, its back down to the 500 marker, at 5-5, after last week’s loss.

To see the song list for each album, for Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, click here: SPLCHB. For With the Beatles, click on: WTB.

To vote in this poll, please go here: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week's Beatles poll we asked: Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band vs A Hard Day's Night, which album do you like the best?

VS

Yet another poll from last week that saw close voting, with Sgt. Pepper's a vote or 2 out of first at different times, but then losing out to A Hard Day's Night in the end by 4 votes. I wasn’t expecting that at all, but hell, I also went with AHDN myself.

You can see the results from this one, here: Beatles Weekly Poll – week 361. Or, you can check out the final results at the: The Beatles' Albums page, which is located at the domain’s Lennon Site.

Well, that takes care of yet another week of polls! Well, it’s another holiday weekend here in the States, as Monday is Washington's Birthday, even if some states don’t call it that anymore. But that’s what it’s called where I live and in most states. Anyway, and most important, many have the day off, and if you’re one of them, enjoy your extra day off!

As usual I thank all of you for voting in our polls each week!
