It's funny, I read that book Ronnie and don't recall this at all! But I agree, the New Yardbirds never would have lasted with Ronnie in there instead of Jimmy Page, and for sure no Led Zep would have taken place then, either. But the thing I do recall was that Jimmy had to play in the New Yardbirds, since he was under contract to do so, he had no choice but to be there when he was.
As far as what would had happened in '74 if Ron had joined the New Yardbirds instead of Jimmy? They won't have lasted until '74 is my guess, but had they, well one thing for sure, there would have been no Ronnie in the Stones, Ronnie!
