Thoughts on the "#MeToo" movement...? (NSC)

I am all for the public outing of men (and occasionally a few women) who have sexually abused, assaulted, or harassed other people. Its a good thing that Harvy Weinstein, Bill Cosby, and dozens of others have been exposed. The courts, police, and society in general have done a poor job dealing with these situations. So the ruination of careers and their public humiliation is totally reasonable. The fact that these guys are being fired from their jobs is also just fine. After all, corporations are equivalent to private citizens in these matters and they can do as they please.

With all this said, I do have issues with the 'guilty until proven innocent" aspect of these cases. I tend to quickly believe scores of women, such as those who have accused Cosby and Weinstein. But what about the celeb who has had one accuser, or two (such as James Franco or Ben Affleck)? And what about the cases where we're just not sure?

Aziz Ansari was just publiclly accused of 'something' when a woman wrote a blog posting titled "I went on a date with Aziz Ansari. It turned into the worst night of my life". In it she describes a situation where she was uncomfortable and unhappy with the fact that she had sexual interactions with this man, but what she describes simply fails to add up to sexual assault. Cases like this are very troubling.

I think we need real change in our culture. We objectify women constantly in the media and we sexualize EVERYTHING in advertising, films, music videos... EVERYTHING in media. Why don't we spend some time railing against these things and making real changes?

Bad men getting ruined is fine with me, as long as they are bad. But we have to be careful about creating a culture where a simple accusation is accepted as fact regardless of its veracity. We also can't look at all these cases in the same way. Ben Affleck is NOT The same as Harvey Weinstein, unless there are a whole lot of things we have yet to know.

I'm also worried that we're turning over this attempt to make social change to the internet, which seems to water down everything, where we can all throw our 2 cents in without having to actually do anything or take any risks.
