TY/12x5/LIB/Criminal songs/more!

We enter our third week of 2018 and for me; well I still don’t have a 2018 calendar yet! But regardless, I still know it’s Sunday night and time to talk about this week’s 5 weekly polls, starting off the poll post as usual talking about the Stones poll, where we enter week 964, and where we always run 2 polls per week. So this week’s first question asks this: Which is the most underrated song on the Stones Tattoo You album?

This week in the Stones underrated song poll per album, we look at 1981's Tattoo You. I really hate to ever call this a '80s Stones album, since most of the songs on this one were made and recorded in the '70s with some featuring the departed Stone Mick Taylor on lead guitar. The only 2 songs made from this LPs sessions, in late 1980 were "Neighbors" and "Heaven". "Neighbors" would be the only song that the entire band played on for these short TY sessions, as Keith and Ronnie are both AWOL on “Heaven", making it the only Stones song to feature bassist Bill Wyman on lead guitar (or on any guitar for the matter on a Stones’ cut).

So we have here an album of songs that they totally forgot about years ago, and some of these songs were excellent and became big Stones hits after their release. The 2 biggest songs on this LP were “Start Me Up" (from '74 and '75 sessions) and "Waiting on a Friend" (from a 1970 session, and which made all of MT fans miss him even more once this one was released). Both songs could be looked at as underrated here too, since they clearly were lost gems that the band underrated at first and forgot about, as MJ said about these songs. One last note with WOAF, the sax part was recorded in ’80 at the TY sessions, as the rest of it was from ’70.

To cast your vote in this first poll, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

The second Stones poll is where we run the Stones album VS matchups, and this week we ask this question: 12x5 vs Let It Bleed, which album do you like the best?

vs

This week the "= 60 Polls" returns, featuring the 1964 Stones LP, 12x5. In the VS standings, this one just misses the Top 10, as it sits tied in 11th place (with Tattoo You) with a 8-6-1 record. It will take on the monster album Let It Bleed this week, with this being only 12x5’s second battle with one of the Big 4. LIB sits in second place with an almost perfect record of 14-1-0, only having lost to the great Sticky Fingers.

To cast your vote in this second Stones poll, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

At the first Stones poll last week we answered this question: Which is the most underrated song on the Stones Emotional Rescue album?

Oh crap, we had a dreaded tie for first place in this one last week. It was between the song I voted for, "Let Me Go", and a song I expected to see get some votes, but was shocked at it tying for first place, that being "Indian Girl", which many fans (not I) look at as their worst ever song. But IMO, no question IG is underrated, but the most underrated on this LP? Well, not to me it is. But this means a special VS poll will be needed to be run to determined which song is the most underrated. But with the exception of 2 songs that saw few votes, every other song on this LP were very close in the voting, as after the tie for first, spots 3 thru 8 were separated by just a total of 2 votes (in other words, we had ties for those spots, too). To see the full final results, click onStones Weekly Poll - week 963, poll 1. Or, you can see the top pick from this poll and the other Stones songs picked from the other albums we already voted on for this question, here: Stones Fans Picks Page 1. It’s listed about a third of the way down on the page, just before the “Songs only” lists starts.

Looking back at last week’s second Stones poll, the question was: Out Of Our Heads vs Blue and Lonesome, which album do you like the best?

vs

Well, another Stones album VS week is finished, and I have to say again that we had yet another week where the voting wasn’t close at all. That surprises me some, as where I can see that the Stones latest LP is having a hard time in these matchups, I would have thought last week's battle would have been at least closer. But as many of the Gassers have noted here, most prefer Jagger/Richards songs over the covers that they only have on B&L. I got to wonder if I just asked fans to forget about that one fact, if B&L would do better in these battles? But of course, that can't ever be, as who wrote the songs is an important part to these album matchups, too. To see the poll’s final results, just click here:Stones Weekly Poll - week 963, poll 2. Plus, I’ll add the results from this poll to the standings at the Stones VS Page 1, where at the top of the page you can check out the updated standings on how each album has done in these long running VS polls.

Over at the Classic Rock Poll we enter poll week 604, and just like as we do at the Stones poll, we vote in 2 poll questions a week in this one too. The first poll’s question this week asks this: What is the best Rock song written about people who committed crimes? (Part 2 of 3)

If you think last week's list for Part 1 was filled with great songs, and which made it hard to choose just one from the list, well, wait to you see this week's list! I've seen this list for 3 weeks now and I'm still not sure which song out of the 31 that I'll go with. Really, where last week's poll was excellent to keep an eye on, this week's will be even more so!

To vote in this poll and make your pick for the best song written on this subject matter about people who committed crimes, click here: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

At the second Rock poll this week, known better as the Rock VS poll, we will vote on this new question: “1984” by David Bowie vs “1984” by Van Halen, which one of these 2 different songs with the same title, is better?

vs

We continue with the series called “Same Title, Different Song” Polls once again this week, where, we take 2 songs that are totally different from each other as far as their lyrics go, and the only one thing they have in common, is the 2 songs have the same titles. Then we just ask for the better song of the 2.

"1984", was written by David Bowie and released in 1974 on his Diamond Dogs LP, and was inspired by George Orwell's novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. Bowie wanted to use the song to launch a stage musical based on the book, but Orwell's widow said no to that, so it never happened. But perhaps Bowie was lucky that he was never sued over this song's music, which sounds very much like the music from the movie and 1971 hit song "Theme from Shaft" by Isaac Hayes, thanks to the wah-wah soul guitar heard on the song (played by Alan Parker). Interesting that on the Diamond Dogs LP, Bowie played all of the lead guitar parts on the songs, other than on this one, as his usual lead guitar player, Mick Ronson, wasn't on this LP. As it was, none of the other Spiders from Mars (his backing band) were on this LP, either. This song is also the only song on the LP where Bowie didn't play any instruments on, either.

"1984" by Van Halen, an instrumental, was the title cut to the album released in the same year. Perhaps it should had maybe just been noted as an Eddie Van Halen solo song, since not only did he write it, but he's the only one playing on it, with him on the synthesizer playing alone. You would think this one would have been more suited for Bowie, as it's just so spacey, like what we expected from Bowie back then…. but not Van Halen. Yet Eddie's first instrument, which he started to play when he was just a 6 year old boy, was classical piano, as was also the case for his future drummer brother, Alex. They both were forced to take piano lessons by their parents, which in turn got them to dislike keyboard instruments. So a few years later on, while still preteens, Eddie switched to playing the drums, while bro Alex started to learn to play guitar. Then one day the 2 boys decided to try out each other's instruments and before long they switched instruments, with Alex finding out he was a better drummer, while Eddie realized he was better on the guitar. Neither of them went back to the piano for years. After Van Halen was formed, on the first 2 LPs Eddie only played guitar, then he decided to play electric piano on a song on their third LP, and he slowly started to get interested in the keys again. By their fourth LP he started playing synthesizer a bit and by the time the 1984 album came out, he seemed to be playing more synthesizer on that LP than guitar. Lead singer David Lee Roth totally hated that and the direction he felt the band was heading, and he left the band over that.

As usual as I do for these polls, I provided videos for both songs so you can hear the songs before you vote and compare them. Just remember, for this kind of question, as far as your vote goes, the videos have nothing to do with your vote as far as the actual film clip you see, goes. These videos links are in the voting booth only so you can near the song before you vote but again, we are not voting on the videos, just the songs!

BTW, on the photo used above for the Van Halen song. I usually always find a photo by the band in question for the song we feature for this poll, but there’s nothing up anywhere for the song “1984”, but of course a lot of photos for the LP of the same name that it opens. I found this photo online of the LP and the boy who posed for the painting that became the LP’s cover. The painting was done by artist Margo Nahas, and the boy was a family friend named Carter Helm (so no, it wasn't taken from a childhood photo of David Lee Roth, like some said). I’m very much anti-tobacco, but this was cool to see and cool to know that the boy was holding a candy cigarette in his hand and not the real thing. I was given permission to run this photo if I let you know that you can buy a print of this LP cover directly from Nahas at this site: http://www.vanhalen1984coverart.com/history.php

Looking back at last week’s first Rock poll, we asked: What is the best Rock song written about people who committed crimes? (Part 1 of 3)

The Stones "Midnight Rambler" came in first by half a percent point, after that some very close voting indeed for the other 9 songs that will live on to round 3, with another 4 excellent songs just missing the cut. To see the top 10 from this poll along with the full final results, just click here: Classic Rock Poll 1, week 603. After Part 3 is completed, that final part’s top 10 results will also show up on Top Ten Lists, Page, 14.

In last week’s VS Rock poll, we answered this question: “I’m Free” by the Rolling Stones vs “I’m Free by The Who, which one of these 2 different songs with the same title, is better?

vs

The Stones’ song lead this one for the first 3 days, but as the week drew long, things changed. To see the final results, just click here: Rock Poll 2, week 603. You can also check out the final results at the new VS Classic poll results page at the Classic Rock site, by clicking here: VS poll page 3, list page 15.

We close out this poll post in the usual way, with the Beatles poll, where we enter week 357, asking this question: Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band vs Revolver, which album do you like the best?

VS

This week we bring back the Beatles albums VS polls and will be featuring the 1967 LP, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and which we will simply call this series the "Lonely Hearts Club Band’s polls”.

Sgt. Pepper's has a record in the Beatles VS album standings of 3-2 and is in 6th place. This week it goes up against the 1966 album Revolver, which is sporting a undefeated record of 5-0 and in first place. Yes, to my surprise, Revolver even beat out what IMO is the greatest rock album ever made, that being Abbey Road. So the question is, can it ever be beaten in this series? My answer would be maybe, and while I never been a giant fan of Sgt. Pepper's, many if not most Fab fans are. So this one should be a very interesting poll battle to run this week!

To see the song list for each album, for Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, click here: SPLCHB. For Revolver, click on: Revolver.

In last week's Beatles poll we asked: Rate the Beatles movie Let it Be

Yes, I can repeat this week what I seem to say in every week we ran this poll question for the Beatle movies, that this movie was/is well loved indeed, as yet again, that’s what the final results show, with a “10” being the top pick and seeing the second best ratings yet for a Beatle movie. To see the results from this poll, just go there: Beatles Weekly Poll – week 356. Or, you can check out the final results at the: Beatles Video and Movie page, which is located at the domain’s Lennon Site.

So that does it for this week's poll post. Well, it’s a federal U.S. holiday tomorrow (Monday) with the MLK Day holiday in the U.S. So, if you live in the States, chances are good that you’re off from work and everything will be closed. Enjoy the holiday, and take the time to remember Dr. King and what he did for civil rights in the U.S., especially with that raciest crazy man living in the WH at the moment. Seems like we have taken several steps backwards in the last year, so let’s all try to stop that from happening by speaking out against white supremacists everywhere, regardless if you are right or left of center.

All of you have a great upcoming week, and don't forget to vote, and thanks to all for voting in last week's polls, too!
