I've spent most of my working life working in youth jails in the youth correctional system. What I encountered for most of the 21st century is this: the two favorite genres among young people were the broad category of rap/hip-hop (#1) and Country (#2).
Some like the Stones, Beatles, and other classic bands like Zeppelin. Some like Metal bands, but most like the music of their own era and most of that music is from the aforementioned genres. I did encounter guys who like Screamo, speed metal, death metal and stuff like that. But again, most kids listened to music made within the last 20 years. Biggie, Tupac, Eminem, all those guys are huge for them as well.
Still, there are pockets of this demographic who can be found getting into anything. And they all seem to have some familiarity with Beatles and Stones. When Gassers look at this question, we have to remember that we are utterly steeped in these bands and artists, more so even than our own contemporaries. So our view of this is effected by this from the start.
Its not unfair to say that for young people now (say, folks in their teens and 20s) that the Beatles and Stones are kind of like Frank Sinatra for those now in the 40s and 50s. It is, at least at first, outdated to them, but w=once delved into its a treasure trove of high art, and its all music that will live forever.
