RE: RE: RE: RE: E: Buddhism...nsc

Interesting Keno. No Buddhist would (or should) try to force their beliefs on anyone else. As we said before there is a lot of overlap between Buddhism and Hinduism: the ideas of reincarnation and karma. Karma explains why most Hindus and Buddhists wouldnt ideally or usually commit suicide. Basically your karma is made up of your actions in this and previous lives and so can by no means be avoided. If you are suffering and try to end the suffering by suicide you are just storing it up for the future when it will get even worse. This is not because some god is punishing you, but just the inevitable result of your own past actions. Buddhism also believes that everyone will eventually reach Nirvana. But how long it takes is up to you based on your karma. Buddhists continually talk about "the precious human life" because its believed that it is only as a human that you can progress. If you are born an animal then your life is just instinctual and you're stuck in a cycle that could take millennia to get out of. Therefore its very important to be born as a human, so tossing your "precious human life" away is an act of self vandalism that could have consequences. Buddhists contemplate how many life forms there are on the planet and that they could have been born as any of them--but were fortunate enough to be born as a human. Next time--the teaching goes--they might not be so lucky. And thats one reason why living a good life now is the best way to ensure a fortunate rebirth in the future.

Obviously i know nothing about yr friend and wish her all the best. Perhaps she thought she was somehow sacrificing herself for other people? Motivation is important in Buddhism too and there would be a world of difference between someone who performs an act selfishly and another who performs the same action selflessly.

To finish its worth saying that every day millions of new creatures come into existence. Tomorrow a new consciousness will exist seemingly from nothing. So where does it come from? Just as we know people die we also know people and other beings are always being born. Buddhism relates the two together causally. To put it bluntly you are born into the circumstances that suit your karma. But lots of materialistic people have become so dedicated to the illusions of wealth and power that they just keep going round in circles karmically speaking until they finally exhaust themselves and drop to the lower realms. So it shouldnt be thought that someone who is wealthy and powerful necessarily has "good" karma somehow. We can say they have developed a particular kind of power karma that is leading them and those they influence away from the long term path of dharma and progress. So karma is pretty complex.

Everyone knows that Buddhism is about understanding that desire is based on maya and delusion that can never be satisfied. When that is truly recognized--that the world is full of worthless delusions ready to destroy you--real practice can begin.

Anyway all this only has direct relevance for Buddhists and people interested in it.
