No Spare Parts lyrics

Got an email from a fan the other day about one possible wrong word to the lyrics to the new version of the song "No Spare Parts", that is up on the sites' lyrics page. It's the part where he talking about driving on I-10, and the official lyric is "...take the 10 to Phoenix, be in Tucson by the afternoon... Get some shut eye and pizza and a bite at the greasy spoon...". The email I got insists that the lyrics is instead: "...take the 10 to Phoenix, be in Tucson by the afternoon... Get some shut eye in Benson and a bite at the greasy spoon..."

So I played the song on Youtube tonight and at first if you don't listen closely, it sounds like "pizza" for sure, plus the YouTube video that shows the lyrics, also has "pizza" down for that line. Plus, I got the official lyrics for this song directly from the Stones NYC office when it was finally released back in '11, when this old song was rewritten by MJ, and to be published in that matter.

The song itself was first written in the '70s and was only out on boot back then, and that's all we had for years. But the official lyrics I have do say "pizza", and not "Benson". Yet if you play that lyric over and over again several times, and listen very closely, it does sound like "Benson" is being sung. Of course, MJ doesn't sing the lyric and that line in the song clear enough to where you can tell 100% for sure, but the more I play it over and over again, I'm pretty sure he is singing "Benson" and not "pizza". Plus "Benson" makes more sense (I guess), you aren't gonna be served pizza at at a place that serves greasy food (well, I guess you could, but it's not likely). Plus I got a feeling the lyrics should have "greasy spoon" in caps, since I think he's talking about the joint's name. Yet the official lyrics don't have caps there.

I've only driven on that part on I-10 once in my entire life, way back in the mid'70s on a trip to California, after spending some time living on a hippie commune in southern New Mexico, but yes, Benson is east of Tucson and that's is the direction he is heading in the song.

On a side note, it's also interesting that in the past, can't recall if it was last year or maybe 2 years ago, when I ran a weekly Rock poll question for Thanksgiving week about the holiday and noted here how there are such few Rock songs written about that major U.S. holiday, and I totally forgot to list this song. It may not directly be about Thanksgiving (but the song that ending up picked first in the poll, "Alice's Restaurant" wasn't either), but it is about a trip he's taking at Thanksgiving time and it's one of the few rock songs that the holiday directly comes up (more than once) in the lyrics. But.... then again.... no. Well, it used to come up in the song that is, in the boot version and in the old lyrics, not in the released take of the song or in the new lyrics. Guess Mick didn't feel like getting that turkey he sang about getting after-all, after such a long drive like that!

But anyway, what do you think MJ is singing there, "pizza" or "Benson"? Here is the song on YouTube: No Spare Parts video, and here are the lyrics I have up, including the old lyrics to the song, too: No Spare Parts lyrics.... Just one more thing, do not read the comments down below on this at the YouTube page, not until after you make up your mind first on your own, as you don't need to be influenced either way beforehand. Not any more anyway, as I guess I just did that myself here anyway in this post... But I had to explain what the post is about and that was the only way to explain it all. Plus I could be wrong, Ronnie!
