Indeed, guns have been around for a very long time. When the Founders drafted the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights, the weapons of the day were loaded one bullet at a time. I wonder if the eventual proliferation of military and assault type weapons, and their impact, could have been anticipated at the time? The second amendment also speaks to the right to bear arms as one that is also well-regulated. That part seems to have been intentionally discarded by the NRA gun lobby, for the purpose of maximizing sales revenues. I don't have a perfect solution to offer either, but the notion that sensible gun safety laws cannot be instituted without infringing on the gun rights of law-abiding citizens is absurd. These attacks will no doubt continue, but their frequency is on the rise, and doing nothing short of the usual "thoughts and prayers" will have predictable and negligible results. Certain gun restrictions have helped serve in the interests of public safety -- airport security checks come to mind.
