You didn't like Tom Petty!? Holy shit, he was light years better than the Byrds, who I liked a lot, but he totally outshined them. Did he sound like them, yes, but so what! That was one thing I liked about him, I wished more groups sounded that way. Petty was a big fan of the Byrds, that was why he played like them, but what is wrong with that? He kept their sound alive while nobody else did. Hell, I wish more bands sounded like the Byrda, or the Stones, or the Beatles, too, and the ones that do I like. Just what is wrong with sounding like a band that was great? As long as you put out new music and don't steal from them, that's a great thing, not a bad thing. All of TP's music was original and didn't copy the Byrds at all, it only had the same sound.
One of the best live concerts I saw was one that Tom put on, he knew how to work the crowd, what a great show that was at Red Rocks, and his loss is a major one to rock music.
