Stones singles/SF/TSMR/Album covers/Sitar/Fabs

Week 948 of the Stones weekly poll is upon us, and as we always do at this poll, we’ll vote in 2 poll questions in this one week. The first question will ask this: What is your favorite single put out by The Stones?

We asked this poll question way back in January of 2000, when our polls were only in their 41st week, and long before their last 2 studio albums came out. So 6 new singles have been released since that time and we will answer this question again and include those 6 songs along with the 68 others that were already voted on once before.

But back in early 2000 when we last asked this question, we also didn't see a lot of voters taking part in our Stones poll in those early days, and as it was, the Stones poll was the only weekly poll running at the time. Today we see 10 times the number of voters taking part in our weekly Stones polls now alone, and I do understand why some fans who weren’t around back in 2000, like the idea of running some of the oldest questions again today. I’ve never been a fan of repeats, but in this case, since we are adding choices to the poll, in a way it isn't a repeated poll anyway.

To make your pick for the single that you feel was the best one out of the 72 released by the band, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

The second Stones poll is where we run the Stones album VS matchups, and this week's question asks this: Sticky Fingers vs Their Satanic Majesties Request, which album do you like the best?

vs

It's the return of "The Sticky Polls", and the only Stones album so far to be undefeated in this series - Sticky Fingers. SF is in first place in the standings at 14-0. In this round it takes on the Stones 1967 psychedelic album Their Satanic Majesties Request, which is also not doing too bad in these matches so far, sporting a winning record of 8-6, good for 11th place.

To see the song list for each album, for Sticky Fingers, click here: SF and for Their Satanic Majesties Request, click on: TSMR

To cast your vote in this second Stones poll, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

At the first Stones poll last week we answered this question: Which is the most underrated song on the Stones Black and Blue album?

5 of the 8 songs from this LP had a chance early on in the voting, as this poll was somewhat close up until mid-week or so. But the Billy Preston's written song "Melody" lead for the entire week anyway, and never once gave up the lead, and did prevail in the end.

To check put the full results from this poll, click on here::Stones Weekly Poll - week 947, poll 1. The top results will also show up at the Stones’ Fans Top Picks, page 1 , where each song picked so far as the most underrated from each album is listed.

Looking back at last week’s second Stones poll, the question was: Exile On Main Street vs Steel Wheels, which album do you like the best?

vs

I think you all know which album won last week, guess the only question is by just how much of a landslide it won by. To find out, just click here:Stones Weekly Poll - week 947, poll 2. Plus, I’ll add the results from this poll to the standings at the Stones VS Page 1, where at the top of the page you can check out the updated standings on how each album has done in these long running VS polls.

Over at the Classic Rock Poll, we enter week 588, and just like as we do at the Stones poll, we vote in 2 poll questions a week in this one too. The first poll’s question this week asks: What album cover banned or censored because of issues other than nudity, shouldn't been banned?

The wording of this week’s poll is almost the same as last week’s poll, with one major difference, that is, that this week we look at albums covers banned or censored where nudity had nothing at all to do with them being censored. Yes there are others reasons to ban an album cover besides having naked people on them, as asshole censors can find fault in just about everything or anything.

So this week we will look at album covers that got banned or censored because of issues other than nudity content, which means that none of the 45 albums used in the last 2 weeks, will be used again this week. Plus for this question I’m going about populating the list of choices differently, and I'll just go with covers of albums released mainly before 1990, with just an exception or 2. Just too many choices having 45 different covers to pick from. So I will cut the albums listed for this week down to just 15.

Anyway, like last week, I’ll also explain this week in the poll choice why the LP cover was censored. Sometimes it was because of religious groups’ objections, or using somebody’s picture without their permission, or other stupid reasons, like a toilet is shown on the cover.

Now you will notice at the voting booth that there is the same extra link to the same Wiki page that lists the banned album covers, only this week all of the link’s text states is “covers”. That’s because this week’s questions is a bit longer than last weeks’ and there’s not enough room in the poll’s admin to get all the text to fit, as even text you would never see in the question (like the html code I have to place in there to get the link to work), counts towards the admin’s text space limit. So this was the only way to fit the link in there. You can also check out the list of covers now by clicking here. All of the album covers that you want to check out will be found in the second part of that page, after where the nudity covers are listed.

To pick the album cover that you feel was the most ridiculous to ban out of the 15 new covers listed, just click here: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

At the second Rock poll this week, known better as the Rock VS poll, we will vote on this question: George Harrison’s sitar on Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) vs Brian Jones’ sitar on 'Paint It Black', which sitar sounds better?

This should be an interesting poll. George Harrison's sitar on "Norwegian Wood" was played in the more traditional way then how Brian Jones played his on "Paint It Black", with BJ sounding like he was playing heavy metal sitar, a sound never heard played on sitar before (and really not since). Yet many tradionalish and old time sitar players didn't like that, plus they didn't even like Harrison's playing, either. Even Ravi Shanker, who would later become friends with Harrison, and also become his teacher, actually at first didn’t like any rocker playing the sitar with Rock music, and he flat put said that he didn't like the way Harrison played it on NW. In time he did change his mind.

BTW, in the above photo of Brian and George (who yes, were friends), the third person in the photo was Brian’s then girlfriend, Suki Potier, who looked a lot like another ex of BJ’s, that being Anita Pallenburg. Potier, yet another of the doomed beautiful people of the late ‘60s who didn’t live to see old age, was Brian’s’ second to last girlfriend before his death in ’69. My guess is that the photo was taken sometime in mid-1968.

To vote in this poll, just click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

In last week’s first Rock poll, we asked: What album cover banned or censored because of nudity, deserved it the least?

This was the only poll last week where things were really close, although after a few days things did loosen up a bit. Unlike the poll run 2 weeks ago, where only a handful of covers were even voted on when we asked for the album cover that deserved to be banned, for this side of the question, more than half of the covers got many votes indeed. Rock fans just don't like it when any part of their music or something connected to their music, is being banned or censored. Guess that makes sense, since it is Rock music after all, filled with songs about sex and drugs and at least some antiestablishment anthems, too. So yes, most of the album covers did get a lot of votes last week, and the one album cover that fans felt was the most ridiculous to ban/censor, was Nirvana's Nevermind cover, released in 1991, and that cover featured a nude baby boy swimming under water with his penis exposed, going after a dollar bill on a line. Really, why would anybody feel censoring this harmless cover was needed? What stupid prudes, to say the least. What’s next, banning baby diaper ads? Second place in the voting went to the Hendrix cover of Electric Ladyland, which showed - oh my gosh! - a bunch of nude woman sitting on the ground; while third place went to another album cover that had no business ever being censored, that being the cover of Woodstock 2, which also showed 2 nude kids on the cover. I guess the last interesting note when asking 2 questions in 2 weeks that take the same choices each week and just ask opposite ends of the same issue/question – is to see, in this case, if any album covers got a lot of votes in both polls. That did happen with one album last week, that being the cover that got the most votes 2 weeks ago when it was chosen as the most deserving to be banned. Yet last week it just missed making the top 10, landing in 11th place for votes for it being the one album that never should have been banned, ever. That cover was from the Blind Faith self-titled LP, the one with the girl holding the spaceship in her hands. Guess some fans last week were maybe voting for it as a protest vote to the week before’s outcome? Perhaps.

In last week’s VS Rock poll, we answered this question: Elton's John's 'Empty Garden' (main title) vs 'Hey Hey Johnny'(sub title), which title is better?

In close voting, 'Empty Garden' (the main title) was the choice chosen by fans. To see the poll’s final results, just click here: Rock Poll 2, week 587 You can also check out the final results at the VS Classic poll results page 2, at the Classic Rock site, by clicking here: VS Page 2, List Page 10.

As usual we close out this poll post with the Beatles poll, where we enter week 341 and ask this question: Magical Mystery Tour vs A Hard Day's Night, which album do you like the best?

vs

Week 6 of "the Mystical and Magical Polls”, featuring the Beatles 1967 Magical Mystery Tour album. This week MMT takes on take on yet another Beatle album that came about from yet another movie - this time their very first movie, A Hard Day's Night. But of course, the movies have nothing to do with this poll, as we are looking at the songs on the 2 LPs only.

To see the song list for each album, for Magical Mystery Tour, click on: MMT, and for A Hard Day's Night, click here: AHDN

To vote in this poll, please go here: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week's Beatles poll we asked: Magical Mystery Tour vs Beatles for Sale, which album do you like the best?

vs

This one wasn't close at all, as Magical Mystery Tour kicked butt from the start of voting and kept up the beating until the close of the poll tonight. To see the final results for this poll, just click here: Beatles Weekly Poll – week 340. Or, you can check out the Beatles current album VS standings and past matchups at the: Beatles Albums page , which is located at the domain’s Lennon Site.

So that does it for this week’s poll post! Saw while watching a few football games today that its super hot back east, what’s up with that? The second hottest game - temperature wise, ever played in Buffalo, and it’s the last week in September? Global warming and climate change is real for sure, but out here where I live it’s been just normal fall weather with our highest mountains getting snow, and with even maybe a few flakes falling tomorrow nite down here in town. Damn, my garden, as far as the tomato plants for this year go, are behind schedule and still need another full week for the remaining fruit to ripen. Guess I’ll need to cover them so they don’t freeze at nite, but last year at this time the garden was already covered in snow, so it could be worst I guess. But I bet my plants wish they were in Buffalo or Boston right now.

As always, I thank all of you who vote in our polls each week!
