For many, myself included, the legitimacy of a band as significant as the Rolling Stones (or The Who for that matter) is compromised to some extent when any of the original members departs. Their greatness originated in part from the synergy generated by a special and unique mix of musicians. After Brian left and Taylor came in they were at their musical peak, but it wasn't the same. Their founder and most creative musician was no longer with them. When Bill left, the original rhythm section was fragmented. Even though Daryl Jones is a top notch bassist, he was never given standing as a bona-fide member. Over time, the Stones have had four members who are primary guitarists, but only one who was a primary bassist. Was Bill's status more "unique" than his guitarist band-mates in some respect? In a scenario where Charlie was to exit, they could continue to do live shows, but the cast of characters performing on stage would outnumber the remaining two original members by a ratio of 3 or 4 to one. Would it still be the Rolling Stones? Perhaps, and even sounding great as always, but again not to the same extent as the magical blend that defined the band when they first started.
