The Stones are all in their 70s. Its a grand and romantic idea that people can get better with age. But it doesn't always work that way. Yes, there are nuances in an older performer not found in a younger one. There is credibility, gravitas, depth. There's a great story with Frank Sinatra (you'll all recall that I am a huge fan) where the president of Capitol Records was trying to get Frank to agree to record again. At one point he simply told him that "there's a difference between Lawrence Olivier doing Shakespeare at 75 and Lawrence Olivier doing Shakespeare at 25. Sinatra got it, and off he went.
But there are deficiencies that come with getting older too. And hardly anyone can go their job as well at 75 as they did at 25. We have to accept this. And the Stones job, at least when performing live, requires athleticism and endurance that would be hard even for many men in their 40s or 50s to handle.
We'll see more 'senior moments' with Mick and Keith, just as we saw Sinatra forget the words to My Way on more than on occasion. But hopefully with lots of back up people there are many concerts still to come.
