Yes and no, it just depends on the family. As was shown in the movie the Godfather, which was mainly based on a true story and mainly about the NY Genovese crime family (but was actually about all the main NY families combined into one), one of the heads of that family was Irish, and this was back in the '50s. Then the head of the biggest family in Boston, wasn't Italian, either. So only some families were that way in who they took in andyes, 95% of them were of Italian descent.
The funny thing about this guy I knew, Joe, was when we first met and talked, he asked me what I was. I always hated it when people ask that, and my answer is always the same, I say "I'm American!". So he says to me, "you know what I mean, what nationality are you?" So I say "Italian", and he asks me where in Italy was my family from and when I said "Naples and also northern Italy", he says to me "Then your not Italian!" To him, and like a lot of mob people, if you weren't from Sicily, you weren't Italian to them!
