Today you have a very fragmented music scene, with countless genres but also many outlets for these myriad genres. The music world today thrives in what we call the "long tail market". Whereas in the 1960s, and well into the 70s and maybe even beyond, all you had were a few stations, a few channels. So there was only so much room at the top. And the Stones, The Beatles, The Who, and Zeppelin, along with a few others stood at the top of the mountain and there was room up there for anyone else.
Its a different world now. Consider the fact that there are no real 'variety shows' anymore. At least not many and they are not big. In the 60s you had things like The Ed Sullivan Show where you could see a magician, a rock n' roll band, dancing, a classical violinist, and more all in one show. Now everything is specialised into shows and channels that cater to very specific niches and genres. I see the need for that, but something is lost there as well. There is no longer interplay between genres and you don't get fans of diverse tastes getting together to view the same show.
I'd welcome and Ed Sullivan Show for the 21st century!
