Heoin's a hell of a drug

I have heard that there are people who can regulate their use of it and be on it for decades, even growing old using it. But I wonder if those stories are just myth, like the old man played by William S. Burrows in Drugstore Cowboy. What you normally see is people's lives ruined by it. I know a guy back in the 1990s who would show up for work on Heroin, and often drunk too. Needless to say he lost that job. He never made it to age 60.
