Robertson could sing, perhaps not nearly as well as others in the group, but in The Band he almost always chose not to in order to keep "balance" in the group, since he was also the primary writer and lead guitarist. He sang lead on a few things with The Band over the years, among them "To Kingdom Come" on Big Pink, "Out of the Blue" from the studio Last Waltz disc, "Knockin' Lost John" from Islands, and "Bessie Smith" from the Basement tapes. Also the second verse of "Ain't No More Cane" also from the Basement Tapes. He also sings the early demo version of "Twilight" which is included on the Musical History anthology. Danko sang the final studio version. His voice on solo releases artist sounds raspier and smokier than the few vocal appearances he put in with The Band.
