I used to kind of hate this band. Back in high school (in the kate 80s ('88, '89, '90, something like that) they were pretty big. I was totally into the Stones, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and The Who, and I saw the Black Crowes as trying to be like these other great bands and sort of faking it. They did all they could to 'look' the part of drugged out rock stars, steeped in the blues. Their videos annoyed me too. Even their album titles sounded contrived, like "The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion". "The Crowes haven't ceased their cocky pillaging of the universal jukebox – echoes of the Stones and Led Zep abound," said Paul Evans of Rolling Stone magazine. To me, that's all this band did. It also didn't help that in my school there were a bunch of wannabe rockers who played the Crowes constantly and extolled their virtues to all who would listen.
So, I just NEVER liked them. They didn't symbolize a resurgence of Rock for me, but rather the death of it.
However... over the years I have checked so many things out. And with stuff like iTunes you can try one song here and there without committing to a whole album.
And guess what... I kinda like their sound. I have their first album (physical copy on CD) and I have others songs here and there.
These days I care very, very little about the people behind the music and the clothes they wore, or the videos they made, or even their motivations for creating certain sounds or songs. I look at everything in a different context now and care about the music and little else. So I am digging the Crowes a bit these days.
