RE: RE: RE: Did Dylan plagiarize?

Plagiarism is a concept worth a lot more thought than most of us were probably bred to think in school. How much does it matter, and what should "being accountable" mean? How original is Bob (and the Stones, and Zeppelin, etc. etc....) despite clearly borrowing heavily from their sources, sometimes citing them and sometimes not? Are they all simply fakes, having culturally misappropriated thought and music from whomever they felt like? How can we possibly expect everyone to fully account for everything they know or say in their lives? If you synthesize and critically examine and/or create anything at all can you really say that it was all original, and all your own doing?? For example, that article I posted notes that while Dylan took a lot from the writer Jack London, among others, London himself had a fake name and undoubtedly leaned on and stole from countless unknowns that came before HIM! If you keep applying that on down the line, where does it eventually lead?? Clear-cut cases might seem easy but then again maybe not. I remember hearing a very well-done report last year on the Stairway-to-Heaven case, where a musicologist found many examples going back to medieval times where the main descending riff in stairway could be heard; calling into serious question my initial thinking that it clearly sounded like it came from the Taurus song....anyway, I'm just pondering here.

While I now think I'd completely agree with the statement that "everything about Bob is a deception" I'm not sure at all to what degree it matters or takes away from what he's done. I suppose in cases of copyright and money it matters more if you are outright stealing from somebody, but then again I don't think the copyright deadlines should keep getting extended, keeping the songs from entering the public domain--that kind of maneuvering is bullshit.
