It was a huge defeat early in the war, that we (the U.K.) managed to turn into a propaganda victory.......I had two uncles and an in law who were on the beach at Dunkirk. The in law told me of the utter confusion as everyone was making for the coast, or thought they were. The in law was in a jeep with a Captain (I think he said) and three or four squaddies, and at one point they ran into a column of British troops going in the opposite direction who asked them "where the fuck are you lot going?"... "Dunkirk".... "you're going the wrong fucking way!"........they were headed straight for the advancing Germans.
Btw this movie is a remake of the 1958 movie of the same name, that starred John Mills and Richard Attenborough.
